This time, in conjunction with the Osaka University Social Solutions Initiative, we will be presenting “Cosmic Energy: The Origin of the Universe,” which focuses on Yasuo Nomura’s work “Star View,” which was installed outside the International Space Station (ISS) and traveled in space for several months. An exhibition will be held.

About Cosmic Energy: The Origins of the Universe
What exactly is the truth of the universe and the reality in which we live? In this exhibition, three artists, New York-based artist Yasuo Nomura, artist and Kyoto University professor Naoko Tosa, and New York and Chicago-based new media artist Schlumper, will answer this grand question. We will consider it from various perspectives.

Yasuo Nomura’s work “PION Plate and LoGlobe Tour”
In March 2023, Yasuo Nomura’s first space art piece, “Star View” (commonly known as PION Plate), was sent to the International Space Station (ISS) and was installed in an exposure facility outside the Kibo Experiment Module for several months. It is the first art piece in history to “experience space” and has returned to Earth after being exposed to outer space, where radiation and strong ultraviolet rays fly around for a while. Nomura will take on the challenge of creating a work that resembles the Olympic towers from plate works of the five elements of fire, water, earth, wind, and space, including this work that “experiences the universe.”
Osaka University’s Nakanoshima Center, the venue for the world’s first public exhibition, is also the place where Dr. Hideki Yukawa discovered the π-meson theory, which led to him winning the Nobel Prize in Physics, which is the basis of the “PION theory” proposed by Nomura through his artist activities. there is.
The work “Viewing Stars” was planned and executed by Spacetainment, a member of PION UNITED, a project team formed based on Nomura’s concept of “art made by everyone.” It was sent to the Kibo Experiment Module of the International Space Station by a Falcon 9 rocket, was installed in the external exposure facility, and returned safely to Earth at the end of June after a three-month journey through space. Putting this into practice in the form of art and exhibiting it at the Osaka University Nakanoshima Center can itself be called a return to basics.

Naoko Tosa’s work “Sound of Ikebana Zero Gravity Art”
The Sound of Ikebana series is a masterpiece by Professor Naoko Tosa of Kyoto University.
Among them, the work exhibited this time, Zero Gravity, is a dynamic work that uses 1/2000 second high-speed camera technology to visualize sound vibrations in zero gravity during parabolic flight. Originally, this project aimed at “cultural computing,” which uses cutting-edge technology to discover the universal cultural identity hidden in the physical senses of modern people through the integration of science. An immersive installation that uses four-sided projection and three-dimensional sound, allowing you to experience for yourself a world that cannot be seen with the naked eye, where you can feel as if flowers are moving, freed from gravity. .
