“Print dyeing is a “bubbling” job.”
So says Hiroshi Akino, a print dyer at Akino Dyeing Crafts, a company that has been operating in Akune City, Kagoshima Prefecture since 1988.
[Image 7

Mr. Akino continues to make each piece by hand using the Japanese tradition of “shirushizome”. Ink-zome has long been used as a link between “Hare” and “Ke”, such as banners on shrine banners and great catch flags on fishing boats.
Due to technological innovation, mass production using machines has become mainstream in the world of dyeing, so why do we insist on handicrafts? When asked, Mr. Akino answered as follows.
“Time, space, and humans. The common character in these three words is ‘awai’. This is the part of my work.”
[Image 8

Put up banners to announce the time of celebration, hang curtains to create a space, send big catch flags to convey people’s feelings, etc. If there is a single piece of ink dyeing in time, place, or people, it will become a visible shape. Akino says that by creating that “bubble” by hand, a more special bond is born.
Even though it can be described as “handwork,” it is actually a tremendous amount of painstaking work that requires concentration and patience. It takes time and you can’t make a lot at once. You can’t do everything the same way like a machine.
But that’s precisely why I’m so happy that I finally found it after such a long wait, and I’m so excited to see this one-of-a-kind piece in the world. I believe that creating and using things was originally an experience filled with excitement.

Mr. Akino created the original tenugui for Toomawari. Each piece is hand-crafted, from engraving to dyeing. It features a warm flower pattern that gently blooms in your daily life.
Tenugui are thin, light, and dry easily, and can be used for wiping sweat, wrapping things, and incorporating them into interior decorations. If you have just one, it will be a reassuring presence that will easily accompany you. Please enjoy the texture of
handicrafts through your daily life.

It’s a small shop in the mountains
Makurazaki is located at the southernmost tip of Kagoshima Prefecture. A 15 minute drive from the city center was the site of an old post office.
This area once prospered as one of the three major gold mines that supported the Shimazu family of the Satsuma domain, and there was also a red-light district, and there was also a bridge called
“Misui-bashi” nearby, where you could wonder whether to go to the red-light district. , a very mysterious area. The Kanago Kanayama Post Office was built on that land in 1903. In the summer of 2020, the building remained vacant for over 30 years after it was closed in 1981 due to deterioration.
“If you’d rather have it destroyed, why don’t you buy it and do something with it?”
We raised our hands in response to that voice and will be reborn as the Wildcat Bottling Research Institute in the summer of 2022. While retaining the Japanese atmosphere typical of an old folk house, the space has a mysterious atmosphere inspired by Kenji Miyazawa’s “Restaurant of Many Orders.”
Surrounded by the rich aroma of Makurazaki bonito flakes
The store sells bottled products such as seasonal pickles and chai syrup made with local ingredients, as well as miscellaneous goods original to the Yamaneko Bottling Institute.
Our bottled products use carefully selected local ingredients, and we aim to create products that will make your mind and body happy the more you eat them. We carry a wide variety of miscellaneous goods, including items original to the Yamaneko Bottling Research Institute, which are inspired by a restaurant with many orders.
seasonal pickles

What on earth are these small, round, adorable children?
The answer is…Hashioki!
These cute hashiokhi are made at Warabe Kobo in Akune City, Kagoshima Prefecture. Its name is “Okuchian Hashioki”. The design allows you to place your chopsticks on this open mouth part.
Each piece is rolled about 100 times, then the craftsmen paint it by hand to bring it to life. Each item is unique.

\\ Yoshio Orihashi’s bamboo woodwork bamboo butter knife //
Yoshio Orihashi makes bamboo wood products in Akune City, Kagoshima Prefecture. I first met Mr. Orihashi when I visited the Akune City Silver Human Resources Center’s bamboo craft club. Just when I thought I was making carefully selected bamboo crafts, handmade wood crafts came out of the warehouse one after another… This old man is no ordinary man. I had a feeling like that.
[Image 19

When asked about the source of his energy, he replies, “Of course it’s bicycles.” At 80 years old, Mr. Orihashi still rides his bicycle every morning, 6 km each way, for 40 minutes, to get to the mountain hut. When I was surprised and asked, “That mountain road?!”, she laughed and said, “It’s okay because it’s a mountain road.”
While moving your body in nature, you can devote yourself to handiwork that excites your heart. The works created by Mr. Orihashi are filled with the joy of living.
