Bijutsu Publishing Co., Ltd. (Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo) will release the Winter 2024 issue (No. 115) of “Winart” on Tuesday, December 5, 2023. The special feature at the beginning of the book, Southern Burgundy, France, focuses on Mâconné, a major white wine producing area, and Beaujolais, which is famous for Beaujolais Nouveau. What is the reason why both production areas are attracting attention now? In addition, we will introduce 28 wines that won gold medals from the Japan Wine Competition 2023, which had the largest number of participating wineries ever.

Located in the south of Burgundy, Maconnais is a major white wine producing region, and Beaujolais is known for its Beaujolais Nouveau, which was released on the 16th, the third Thursday of November. Chardonnay is a variety that produces great white wine in the Côte d’Or, the heart of Burgundy. Mâconné is also a producer of white wine made from Chardonnay, but there was a time when quantity was valued over quality, so it was not highly regarded as a production area. However, now there are more and more ambitious makers, and the quality has improved. In addition, the price of grapes from the Côte d’Or has soared, and the region is attracting a lot of attention from Côte d’Or producers.

On the other hand, in Japan, Beaujolais Nouveau has been the focus of attention, and has been seen as a festival wine, with the essence of Beaujolais not being properly understood. The main variety cultivated is Gamay. The wine produced tends to be associated with a light, fruity flavor that can be drunk quickly, but it is actually a popular variety that can withstand long-term aging.
In this special feature, we introduce 12 notable producers from these two production areas.
