“Aratama” (Location: Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture,
Representative: Jun Tsuzaki) is on the crowdfunding site “READYFOR” with the aim of developing and selling chutney (all-purpose seasoning) using discarded Arao pears. We will be recruiting support. It will start on Friday, December 8, 2023, and the target amount is 500,000 yen. The funds will be used to maintain the system from development to production line.

■Reason for starting the Araori project
“Arao pear” is one of the most famous brand pears in Japan, and its fruit is so large that it is also called “jumbo pear.” This is a traditional autumn flavor that has been passed down by pear farmers in Arao for over 100 years.

Arao pears are currently in a difficult situation, with approximately two-thirds of their production going to waste due to factors such as global warming. A large number of substandard pears are collected and discarded as a matter of course.

Under these circumstances, the number of Arao pear farmers has decreased by half in 30 years. If nothing is done, it could lead to a crisis in the survival of Araori. “Is there anything I can do?” With this in mind, I decided to start developing processed products using discarded pears.

Tsuzaki, a culinary explorer, has devised an original recipe that takes advantage of the charm of Arao pear and adds spices such as cumin and coriander. Not only can it be used as a secret ingredient in a variety of dishes, but it is also delicious as a chutney on its own. [Image 9
The recipe is almost complete, and the baton has been passed on to art director Moriyama, who has begun working on the product concept and packaging. In the future, we are collaborating with companies in the prefecture and aim to commercialize large quantities of discarded pears by manufacturing them at our factories. This is because we believe that stable commercialization will lead to stable profits for farmers.
However, there is still a lack of equipment and funds to commercialize large quantities of discarded pears. Therefore, we started collecting funds on the crowdfunding site “READYFOR”. Starts on Friday, December 8, 2023. The target amount is 500,000 yen. The funds will be used to maintain the system from development to production line.
For those who support us, we have prepared rewards such as chutney. Taking advantage of our core business of cooking and design, we offer a lineup of services such as on-site cooking, online cooking classes, business card, and logo design creation.
■Future development of the project

Our goal in the future is to reduce the amount of agricultural products that go to waste, not just Arao pears.
I believe that if the scheme to create products from discarded agricultural products spreads across Japan, it will lead to
improvements in food loss and environmental issues. We are planning a wide range of expansion, including crowdfunding as well as using SNS, etc.
