Sado International Art Promotion Organization
The “Sado Island Galaxy Art Festival” in Sado City, Niigata
Prefecture, in which Kazuo Umezu, Terry Riley and others are participating, is in financial difficulty due to the end of the subsidy, and is trying to crowdfund to continue the event!
While the survival of Sado Island’s art festival is in doubt, we are trying to crowdfund at MOTION GALLERY until December 29th, with the aim of continuing to hold the art festival created by island residents, artists, and visitors.
……
The Sado International Arts Promotion Organization, which organizes the Sado Island Galaxy Art Festival, in which domestic and
international artists exhibit their works and perform in Sado City, Niigata Prefecture, has raised 5 million yen through crowdfunding in preparation for next year’s art festival. We are seeking support for this goal. As the period of government subsidies has ended and we are facing financial difficulties, we are seeking support through crowdfunding. The funds raised will be used to cover the operating costs of the art festival and the restoration costs of TAACHI, the contemporary art gallery and exchange complex where the event will be based. Returns include support courses starting at 5,000 yen, collaboration goods with artists Naohiro Ukawa and Takashi Homma, and unique Sado Island art tours to carefully selected spots. In the future, we plan to add rice terraces from the Iwakubi village, which was the venue for art festival exhibitions and performances, as return items. Please feel free to introduce us in your media.

The Sado Island Galaxy Art Festival was started in 2016 as an experiment by island residents who gathered together to create new tourism demand through art. Since the Kitamaebune ships that once traveled back and forth brought not only goods but also a variety of culture to Sado, the basic idea was defined as “a port of return for the past and the future.” Transcending time and space, on the remote island of Sado Island, people involved in Sado Island rediscover what is important to humanity through art, and hold a pre-art festival every year with the aim of “connecting the past to the present and the future” globally. I’m doing a project.

2016-2022 Income and Expenditure Trends
In 2022, the organization has recorded a large deficit in its financial situation as it has repaid the accumulated deficit that it had borrowed to date. This repayment made management even more difficult.
Crowdfunding is a support method that allows anyone to easily choose how to get involved through “support.” By positioning crowdfunding as a “pillar that supports the operation of the art festival,” along with public subsidies, self-funds, sponsorships, and supporting members, we hope to create an international community where islanders, artists, and visitors work together to create an international community. We want to make the “Art Festival” even more essential. Through this crowdfunding, we hope that many people will be able to learn about the activities of the “Sado Island Galaxy Art Festival” once again, and that it will be an opportunity for them to experience art festivals and art events that are unique to Sado Island, which is a remote and remote island. I’m very happy.
We appreciate your continued support and cooperation.
The future I want to realize
– Creation of new jobs and new businesses, promotion of new tourism, promotion of migration, university collaboration projects, etc. in preparation for “Sado Island Galaxy Art Festival 2024”
– Restoration and promotion of utilization/continued employment of the contemporary art gallery/exchange complex “TAACHI”, which is a renovated former Showa-era store and serves as a base for activities. TAACHI, a contemporary art gallery and exchange complex that serves as the activity base for the art festival and a base for community development, not only functions as an art gallery, but also allows artists participating in the art festival to stay and concentrate on their creative activities. There are plans to have it function as a base for artists-in-residence.

When the renovations and repairs are completed, the current TAACHI will be transformed into a more developed facility, with permanent staff, art tours, planning and operation of art hotels, and a place for university students and local people to interact. The facility will be used as an exchange complex that integrates functions such as a video distribution studio, regular exhibitions, and an
administrative office for art festivals, with the aim of creating new culture and further revitalizing the region.
