[National Theater] Launch of crowdfunding project “Bunraku x Animation – Bringing Japan’s proud Bunraku to the world! PROJECT”
[National Theater] Crowdfunding project “Bunraku x Animation – Bringing Japan’s proud Bunraku to the world! PROJECT -” has been launched. We are soliciting donations until Wednesday, January 31, 2020, with a goal of 5 million yen.

The National Theater (Independent Administrative Institution Japan Arts Council) (located in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) aims to expand overseas through the collaboration of “Bunraku” and “animation,” both of which are world-class cultures that Japan is proud of. We have launched the “Project” to bring our proud Bunraku to the world!
In this project, we will take on the challenge of using animated background art instead of props on the stage of one of the best Bunraku masterpieces, Sonezaki Shinju. The person who serves as the supervisor is Living National Treasure, Reverend Kanjuro Kiritake. The background art will be handled by master Kazuo Oga, who was the art director for the movies “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Princess Mononoke,” and has also created background art for numerous anime. In March 2020, the first performance of this project will be held in Tokyo (at Yurakucho Yomiuri Hall), and after that, we will aim to perform overseas.
In order to produce the background video for this project, we will be running the “Bunraku x Animation – Bringing Japan’s proud Bunraku to the world! PROJECT -” on the crowdfunding service “READYFOR”. We will be collecting donations with a goal of 5 million yen from 10:00 a.m. today, December 5th (Tuesday) to 11:00 p.m. on January 31st, 2020 (Wednesday).

◇Video supervision for this project: Kanjuro Kiritake (Ningyo Joruri Bunraku puppeteer)
Each holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property “Ningyo Joruri Bunraku Dolls” has been certified (Living National Treasure). ◇Video art for this project: Kazuo Oga (Animation art director) Has been involved in animation art since 1972. He has worked on the art and backgrounds for many anime works, and since 1988’s “My Neighbor Totoro,” he has been the art director for Studio Ghibli works such as “Omohide Poro Poro,” “Heisei Tanuki Gassen Pon Poko,” and “Princess Mononoke.”
