TKS donates to Minami Town, Tokushima Prefecture through corporate hometown tax, supporting the regeneration of the disappearing “cradle of the sea seaweed beds”
Contributing to biodiversity conservation and regional revitalization ……
TKS Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture, President: Nobuyuki Iwanaga) will use the corporate version of hometown tax to donate 1 million yen to Minami Town, Tokushima Prefecture (Mayor: Nobuyoshi Kageji) on Wednesday, November 8, 2023. We would like to inform you that we have donated. This is our company’s first initiative to donate using the corporate hometown tax payment system. Minami Town is a town rich in nature and is also known as a town where loggerhead sea turtles come to lay eggs. On the other hand, over the past 20 to 30 years, seaweed beds, which can be called sea forests, have been in rapid decline. This donation will be used for Minami Town’s efforts to “Create seaweed beds, create a future,” and will support the conservation of biodiversity and regional revitalization. [Image 1

Social background ~ “Isoyake (loss of seaweed beds)” is considered a problem nationwide ~
Seaweed beds are also called “cradles of the sea” because they serve as habitats, spawning grounds, and nursery grounds for various creatures, and in recent years, the importance of blue carbon (*) has been attracting attention. However, against the background of development during the period of high economic growth and global warming, seaweed beds across the country are said to have decreased significantly compared to the past due to excessive feeding damage (food pressure) by herbivorous animals such as the common Japanese rabbitfish. Masu. Seaweed beds have been rapidly declining in the past 20 to 30 years in the waters of the Minami-cho Hiwasa-cho Fisheries Association. Research has revealed that the main cause of this is food pressure (an environmental term that refers to the intensity with which animals eat plants) caused by herbivorous fish such as rabbitfish and parrotfish.
For this reason, in Minami Town, local stakeholders have established the Moaanibu general incorporated association and are taking action centered on seaweed bed restoration. We aim to build a sustainable virtuous cycle model for regional development and the future of the earth through the development of “local products using rabbitfish” and the “development of recycled resources for seaweed beds and fishing grounds.”

Empathy and support as a company with water technology
Our company is a company whose mission is to contribute to society through water technology, and we are also the manufacturer of the ultra-fine bubble shower head “Bollina.” The technology called ultra-fine bubbles is also known for being applied to Hiroshima oyster farming in 1998 after oysters were wiped out due to red tide. For this reason, we believe that there is great significance in supporting activities that contribute to society through water and the ocean, which led to this support.

*What is blue carbon?
The carbon that is taken into coastal and marine ecosystems and stored in their biomass and underlying soil is called blue carbon. It was defined in the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) report “Blue Carbon,” published in 2009, and has attracted worldwide attention as a new option for sink countermeasures. The main sources of blue carbon absorption are seaweed beds (seagrass and algae), salt marshes such as tidal flats, and mangrove forests, which are called “blue carbon ecosystems.” (Citation: Ministry of the Environment “Blue Carbon Initiatives” https://www.env.go.jp/earth/ondanka/blue-carbon-jp.html) Minami Town, Tokushima Prefecture Corporate version hometown tax https://www.town.minami.lg.jp/docs/2099795.html
