As a result, she was forced to drop out of school, but through a girls’ group supported by UNICEF, she learned about the harms of child marriage. “As a father of young daughters, I was deeply moved to meet Link and other girls who fought for change and spoke out about their futures from an early age. For the girls, Link is a role model. They all benefit from the mentorship supported by UNICEF in partnership with the Government of India.” (Ambassador Beckham)

In Ahmedabad, Ambassador Beckham met with children from the Gujarat Youth Forum, which was set up by UNICEF and partners two years ago to empower children and young people as agents of change. One of them, 12-year-old Prata Vanner, started playing cricket at the age of six and is now the only female player on an all-male team. We also met Aarya Chavda, a 14-year-old writer who donates the proceeds of her books and paintings to underprivileged cancer patients. Cynthia McCaffrey, UNICEF India Representative, said: “The visit of UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador David Beckham to India conveys the importance of equal opportunities and rights for all children, and equal
opportunities for empowerment for all, especially girls. UNICEF reaffirms UNICEF’s mission to help children survive, thrive and pursue their dreams. UNICEF supports and is deeply involved in the Government of India’s efforts to ensure that every child survives, thrives and pursues their dreams. The pursuit of gender equality is at the core of all UNICEF’s work in India.” The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated gender inequalities in South Asia. Increases in domestic violence, child marriage, and loss of paid work and employment have affected girls and women, who continue to bear the brunt of long-term socio-economic shocks in the region.
