What is handed out on the day of the winter solstice is a “Yuzu Bag” made from a combination of the pulp, seeds, and peel, which are the residue left after squeezing the yuzu juice. The photograph is an image.

An image of the completed “shimenawa” made in the workshop. A workshop to make Shimenawa, one of the indispensable decorations for the New Year, will be held for a total of 4 times only on Monday, December 25, 2023.
In Japan, to welcome the new year, people do a year-end cleaning ceremony to purify their homes and welcome the New Year God, who brings happiness for the year. A pine decoration, which is said to be the home of the god of the year, is placed at the entrance, and a shimenawa rope is placed at the entrance to prevent bad things from entering, to pray for the health and happiness of the family. In this workshop, we will be making silk flowers (artificial flowers) and other materials so that people from overseas can take them home with them. Enjoy making your own creations while conveying Japanese customs and traditions.

Masako Takashima | Flower designer Encountered European style flower design while attending university. After graduating from university, he worked at a major flower shop and a flower import trading company before moving to Orchid. After one year of training at a flower shop, he established his own brand “MASAKO’s Flower Design” in 2004. CROSS MOMENTS [Seasons of Japan – Winter Solstice Day, Friday, December 22, 2023]
Based on the movement of the sun, the 24 solar terms have been used as seasonal indicators since the lunar calendar, and we have created a small project that is in line with Japan’s spirit of valuing the four seasons, ancient Japanese culture, and traditions unique to Kyoto. We deliver surprises and “communication with discoveries” to our stay guests.
On the winter solstice, which is the shortest day of the year (Friday, December 22nd in 2023), there is a custom to celebrate the fact that the days will gradually get longer from the next day, and to ward off evil spirits by drinking yuzu hot water containing yuzu. People pray for good health by praying for good health and eating winter vegetables that have an “n” in them, such as winter solstice pumpkin.
