~Sukeroku of Hanakawado~
“Hanakawado” in Asakusa, Tokyo is located along the Sumida River and has been an important water transportation hub since the Edo period. It is a beautiful cherry tree planted by the eighth Shogun Yoshimune for cherry blossom viewing by the common people. It is also known for its rows of trees. Hanakawado is the place where the popular Kabuki character “Sukeroku of Hanakawado” was known as Japan’s most handsome man and was the object of admiration among Edokko. He wears an Edo purple crepe headband that he received from Uogashi, a red undergarment, and a kurohabutae kimono, making him not only manly but also extremely strong in fights. Even today, the local neighborhood association of Hanakawado uses the Sukeroku design throughout the town with a sense of familiarity.
Tully’s Coffee opened “Tully’s Coffee Sumida Park Store” in October 2013 in Sumida Park, located in Hanakawado, as the first commercial store on river property in Tokyo. After the store opened, we used a portion of the store’s profits to work on regional revitalization by creating flower beds facing Sukeroku Yume Street along Sumida Park, adding signboards, installing designed manholes, etc. .
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Sumida Koen store, we decided to give concrete form to the ideas discussed by the “Sumida Park Open Café Council”, and “Tully’s Teddy”, one of the mascots that continues to be loved by Tully’s Coffee, will be ” He will appear dressed as Sukeroku of Hanakawado. He wears an undergarment and kimono inspired by “Sukeroku”, and his Edo purple headband is the focal point. In order to allow more people to enjoy this item, we will also sell it at stores in the Asakusa area, where Hanakawado is located, as well as stores in areas connected to Kabuki. It is recommended not only for buying for yourself but also as a souvenir.
