It’s been 20 years since he made his shocking debut with “Snakes and Earrings.” It has been decided that Hitomi Kanehara’s “Meets the World” (Shueisha) will be made into a live-action film.

Yukari is a fujoshi who loves Yakiniku anthropomorphic manga. On her way home from the second group date of her life, she meets a beautiful hostess, Rai, in Kabukicho, Shinjuku, on a drunken night. “I have to disappear from this world,” Rai says. By living with her, a new door to Yukari’s world opens.
“Meets the World” is about two people: a hostess who wants to die, and a fujoshi who is addicted to promotion. This work has received a great response since it was serialized in the women’s magazine SPUR (Shueisha), and won the 35th Renzaburo Shibata Award. A long interview commemorating the 20th anniversary of Hitomi Kanehara’s debut will be published in the January 2024 issue of “Subaru” (Shueisha), which will be released on December 6th. Please pay attention to the interview in which Ms. Kanehara, who has observed the world through novels, candidly talks about the 20 years since her debut, including the behind-the-scenes story immediately after her debut, changes due to becoming a mother, and writing after the earthquake and coronavirus.

■Hitomi Kanehara Profile
Born in Tokyo in 1983. He made his debut in 2003 by winning the 27th Subaru Literary Award for “Snakes and Earrings”. In 2004, he won the 130th Akutagawa Prize for the same work. It became a bestseller and was translated and published in many countries. 27th Oda Sakunosuke Award for “TRIP TRAP” in 2010, 22nd Bunkamura Dumago Literary Award for “Mothers” in 2012, 5th Junichi Watanabe Literary Award for “Ataraxia” in 2020, and 2021 for “Unsocial Distance”. He won the 57th Junichiro Tanizaki Award and the 35th Renzaburo Shibata Award for “Meets the World” in 2022. Other works include “The Desert of Paris, the Mirage of Tokyo”, “Declineson”, “The Hungry Heroes”, and “Hajikete Mazaret”.
