■Background to the start of provision
With the spread of the Internet, websites have become an important source of information for elderly people and people with disabilities as well as healthy people. Problems arise in which persons with disabilities or persons with disabilities are unable to obtain information from websites, etc., or are unable to complete procedures online, resulting in great disadvantages in their social life, and in the event of a disaster, necessary information is not delivered. If the situation arises, you may face a life-threatening situation. By ensuring web accessibility, more than 4.28 million people (*1) in Japan alone, including people with disabilities, the elderly, and people with color vision, can obtain information and use digital services via the web. You will be able to do it.
With the spread of digital technology and the provision of services through websites becoming more common year by year, it has become more necessary than ever to build websites that are more considerate of web accessibility. Furthermore, from April 2024, even private companies will be required to provide reasonable accommodation to people with disabilities upon request. Everyone, including people in the world, is looking for an environment where they can smoothly use the information and services provided on the web.
However, “accessibility” and “web accessibility” are terms that are not yet fully established in Japanese. Many people are unfamiliar with it, and they don’t know what the term means, how to improve it, or what effects it has. Perhaps because of this, even if someone who doesn’t know the terminology is asked to “improve web accessibility,” they may not even have a clue as to what to do. The guideline documents themselves regarding web accessibility are very specialized, so it is difficult to understand them correctly, and it takes time to be able to make appropriate judgments.
At Kiva, we sympathize with the Digital Agency’s goal of “realizing a people-friendly digital society in which no one is left behind” (*2), and we have developed “Uniweb” so that anyone can easily introduce web accessibility.・We have decided to provide this. We believe that supporting web accessibility will improve usability and lead to increased user satisfaction, and we aim to achieve even more essential ease of use.
