……
The Japan Package Design Association (President: Ryo Ogawa,
abbreviation: JPDA) will hold a special lecture to commemorate the opening of the creative exhibition “Water, Salt, Rice, Sake.” The Edo period was when the culture of the common people blossomed. Food culture unique to Edo was also born, such as soba noodles, sushi, and tempura. Ukiyo-e also occasionally depict food-related scenes, such as a woman happily scooping up a bowl of shiratama (rice dumplings) and a man vigorously eating soba noodles. This course focuses on food scenes that appear in ukiyo-e, using the keywords “water, salt, rice, and sake.” While looking at ukiyo-e prints, you will learn about the diverse food culture of Edo, including the dining conditions of the time, the beloved famous sake, and the famous dishes that appeared on the Tokaido journey.
The theme of the Tokyo edition of the lecture is “Soba, Sushi, and Tempura,” which were born in Edo.
