Shusaku Endo
Born in Tokyo in 1923. Graduated from Keio University, Department of French Literature. In 1955 (Showa 30), he won the Akutagawa Prize for “Shiroi Hito”. His major works include “The Sea and Poison” (Shinchosha Literary Award/Mainichi Publishing Culture Award) “I Abandoned the Woman” “Silence” (Junichiro Tanizaki Award) “By the Dead Sea” “The Life of Jesus” “The Birth of Christ” (Yomiuri Literary Award), “Samurai” (Noma Literary Award), “A Woman’s Life”, “Scandal”, “Deep River” (Mainichi Art Award), “A Couple’s Day”, etc. Received the Order of Culture in 1995. Died of illness in 1996.
