Nissei Co., Ltd.
Modern flavor innovation, Sakura soft serve ice cream is now on sale for the 18th year.
“Seasonal Soft Cream Mix Sakura” will be on sale from February 9, 2024 ……
Nissei Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Ibaraki City, Osaka Prefecture, President: Fumiharu Yoshida), a comprehensive soft-serve ice cream manufacturer, will continue to release “Seasonal Soft Mix Sakura” as a seasonal soft-serve ice cream for spring in 2024. Since 2007, this cherry blossom has been sold as a seasonal product to coincide with the blooming of cherry blossoms in spring, and is now in its 18th year. This year, while preserving the traditional flavor, we will change the flavor to more closely match modern sensibilities. [Image 1
Modernized with a “Sakura” flavor
The new flavor preserves the unique cherry blossom flavor (the flavor of salted cherry leaves), while suppressing the acidity and adding a milky texture to create a soft “sakura” flavor on the palate. Background to this renovation
When we first developed it in 2007, we aimed to recreate the flavor of “Sakura” in soft serve ice cream. I was particular about “cherry blossoms” rather than cherries. However, the Yoshino cherry tree, which is the standard tree for flowering declarations across the country, has a faint scent and has been difficult to reproduce. Through trial and error, I arrived at the flavor of sakuramochi, especially the aroma of salted cherry leaves.
Since around 2010, SAKURA has appeared as a limited edition spring drink in Japan, mainly at major coffee chain stores, and has become a regular feature. This SAKURA also uses salted cherry blossom leaves. However, since the flavor is based on whipped cream and topped with cherry blossoms, it tends to be softer in the mouth, unlike the Japanese sweets Sakuramochi or our seasonal soft-serve ice cream mix Sakura.
Three years have passed since the coronavirus pandemic, and even though the sales volumes of other soft serve mixes are on a recovery trend, Soft Serve Mix Sakura has not fully recovered. During the three years that large-scale vacations were suspended, we determined that the SAKURA flavor of a major coffee chain had become established among consumers, so we changed it to a softer flavor on the palate and modernized it.
Sales in conjunction with cherry blossom blooming
Usually, the sales period for seasonal soft serve ice cream mix sakura is set from early February to late May. This is because the products are adopted by retail stores around the country in time for the cherry blossom viewing season. It is scheduled to be on sale until May 2024. About seasonal soft serve ice cream mix
Seasonal soft serve ice cream is developed with the aim of delivering seasonal products. Initially, the lineup was limited to fruit-based seasonal fruit soft-serve ice cream, but we have also added unusual items such as Western confectionery and beverages to create a lineup of products that are popular and have an impact. During the three years of the coronavirus pandemic, we continued to sell three types of cherry blossom, ramune, and marron as seasonal products.
