Rhizomatiks president Daito Manabe and Moto Ishibashi

Since its establishment in 2006, Rhizomatiks is a creative team exploring the relationship between humans and technology. Their activities have so far crossed genres, and since 2010 they have collaborated with the music unit Perfume, and one of the organizers, Daito Manabe, has collaborated with internationally active artists such as Grimes and Arca. , Ryuichi Sakamoto, Kyogen master Mansai Nomura, and researchers. Rhizomatiks also created the spectacular special effects that adorned Tokyo’s eight-minute performance during the flag handover ceremony at the 2016 Rio Olympics. They pursue new possibilities of expression and actively visualize human imagination using artificial intelligence and virtual technology. It has earned international acclaim for its fusion of cutting-edge creations in the fields of music, dance, stage design, and visual art.

In today’s fast-paced, complex, and ambiguous world, our bodies oscillate between the virtual and physical realms. As technology develops, the boundaries between the perceptible and non-perceptible realms become blurred and intermingled, constantly reshaping our understanding with new meanings. Based on this, Rhizomatiks continues to explore the shifting boundaries of perception from various perspectives. Our collaborations with a wide variety of
internationally active performers have created new forms of our view of the body. In addition, Manabe collaborates with scientists and researchers on in-depth research, particularly with neuroscientists and astronomers, to bring the invisible within our reach through data visualization. The first Rhizomatiks exhibition in China will feature large-scale works that seamlessly blend virtual space with real-life experiences.
