At KAI Nagato, a hot spring inn located in Nagato Yumoto Onsen in the mountains of northern Yamaguchi Prefecture, for a limited time only from January 26th to March 3rd, 2024, you can enjoy the magical scenery of painted andon lights. A walking program called “Walking around andon colored ink” will be introduced. In order to make the Nagato Yumoto Onsen event “Otozuregawa Utaakari” themed on the poetry of Misuzu Kaneko, a native of Nagato City, even more enjoyable, original andon lanterns are painted in ink using Akama inkstone. We have prepared a trial experience for you. Enjoy a luxurious time enjoying the fantastic world of the hot spring town with a limited menu inspired by the poems of Akebono Cafe’s Misuzu Kaneko and original andon lights that you made yourself.

At Nagato Yumoto Onsen in winter, the Otonobu River Utaakari, a light event themed around the poems of Misuzu Kaneko, a nursery rhyme poet from Nagato City, is held on the Otonobu River that flows through the hot spring town. A special scenery will be created with poetic narration and a fantastic light display set to music. We came up with this project because we wanted people to enjoy strolling around the hot spring town even in the cold winter with the illuminations and original andon lights that can only be seen during this period. You will experience painting Nagato’s original andon, an illustrated world based on a poem by Misuzu Kaneko, a nursery rhyme poet from Nagato City, with ink* selected from seven colors. For painting, we use Akama inkstone, a traditional craft from Yamaguchi Prefecture, and during the experience, you can experience the elongation and coloring of the ink that is unique to Akama inkstone. You can also listen to explanations about the characteristics and history of Akama inkstone from the staff.
*It is one of the art materials used since ancient times in the East, and refers to ink in various colors made by kneading pigments and glue.

After the painting experience, you will stroll around Nagato Yumoto Onsen town holding the andon you made yourself. During the event period, the hot spring town is decorated with various lights, creating a fantastic space. By walking around the hot spring town holding the andon you made yourself, the original andon will become one of the lights that create the space of “Otoshinugawa Utaakari”. Akebono Cafe, which is usually only open during the day, will be open at night during the event period. On the menu, we have prepared warm, limited-time menu items such as “Apple Tea” and “Chestnut Zenzai,” which are named after Misuzu Kaneko’s poems “Apple Field” and “Chestnut.” Those who present an original andon made by themselves will receive one of their choice from the menu.
