Mitsubishi Materials is a non-ferrous metal manufacturer that provides non-ferrous metal materials, mainly copper, as well as high
value-added functional materials and products. Additionally, based on our 50 years of experience in geothermal development, we are also engaged in renewable energy businesses including geothermal power generation. On the occasion of our 150th anniversary in 2021, we are supporting four organizations that are actively working to solve social issues, and one of them is WELgee, which we have received support through corporate donations.
Mitsubishi Materials, which receives support through donations, has recently hired a refugee. Mr. D, who was hired this time, is from northeastern Africa. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering in his home country, he worked with JICA as a
geothermal-related engineer. He was active in activities such as evaluation and exploration. Arrived in Japan in 2017. In 2018, he completed a master’s degree at Kyushu University with a thesis on the theme of “characteristic evaluation and modeling of geothermal reservoirs.” After graduating, it became difficult for me to return to my home country due to the situation in my home country, so while I was doing survival jobs (working in the field to earn a living), I was also looking for a job in Japan with the aim of engaging in
geothermal-related work. Ta. Since April 2022, WELgee has been supporting Mr. D in his job search through mentorship programs and other programs. During these activities, Mr. D’s expertise and experience were highly evaluated by Mitsubishi Materials’ Renewable Energy Business Division, and he was hired on a trial basis from February 2023, and officially hired in August. Currently, as a geothermal engineer, I am engaged in research and simulation work on geothermal power generation both in Japan and overseas.

This recruitment went smoothly until the trial recruitment, as candidate D’s knowledge and experience matched the engineer talent that Mitsubishi Materials was looking for. After six months, I was hired as a full-time employee.
In the cases we work on, not all cases are those in which we can create connections as “ready-to-work” human resources. There are a variety of cases, including cases in which a person is immediately effective, and cases in which it takes more than a year to become a force.
