Awara City, Fukui Prefecture
We want to protect and pass down Japan’s oldest stone earrings, a nationally designated important cultural property, to our children! Government crowdfunding (R) challenge underway!
We are working on the [Awara, a town full of culture, history, and art] project that is fun to see, touch, and tour, and aim to create vibrancy throughout the town.
……
Awara City, Fukui Prefecture (Mayor: Morinotsugu; hereinafter referred to as “Awara City”) is working to raise the profile of the nationally designated Important Cultural Property, ketsujo mimikazari (hoop earring-like accessories from the Jomon period). For the purpose of inheritance, we are taking on the challenge of “Government Crowdfunding (R)”, a crowdfunding-type system that collects hometown tax payments, in order to create replicas that can be used in hands-on classes and exhibitions.
The recruitment period is from Friday, November 24, 2023 to Wednesday, January 31, 2024, and the target amount is 3 million yen.

-Project details-
Awara City, Fukui Prefecture, where the [Cyber-shaped earrings] were unearthed, is like this
[Image 2

Awara City, Fukui Prefecture is home to Awara Onsen, the “inner parlor of Kansai” that has been open for 140 years, and is blessed with a rich natural environment where you can enjoy mountains, rivers, oceans, and lakes all within the city. Echizen crab, the king of winter flavors, is in full season! Awara is also known as the “Fruit Kingdom” because of its thriving agricultural industry and the cultivation of various fruits throughout the year. Also, as the birthplace of Koshihikari, Koshihikari is produced, as well as many other varieties of rice.
Awara City’s historical and cultural resources

In addition to Jomon period earrings, which are designated as national important cultural properties, there is also the fantastic Miyaya Quarry Ruins that looks like the one depicted in the anime, as well as modern art and creative experiences in the vast forest. It is also a city with excellent historical and cultural resources such as the Kanazu Crescent Forest Museum, Rennyo no Sato Yoshizaki, and Honjin Kazarimono. However, these resources are scattered throughout the city, and there is less interest in them compared to the popularity of the hot springs, and the number of guests staying at Awara Onsen has flown to nearby famous tourist spots such as Tojinbo and Daihonzan Eiheiji Temple. There is a current situation.
Hokuriku Shinkansen opens! We want to make the most of this
once-in-a-century opportunity and protect and pass on our precious cultural assets!
On March 16, 2024, Awara Onsen Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen line will open, a once-in-a-century opportunity. In order to make the most of this opportunity and lead to regional revitalization, we need to work to improve our resources and improve tourists’ satisfaction with their stay in the city.
-The core of Awara, a town rich in culture, history, and art The core of this project is the “Cho-shaped earrings”, which are the oldest stone earrings in Japan and of the highest quality and quantity at the time, and are recognized to have extremely high academic value when considering international exchange during the Jomon period. It was designated as a national important cultural property in 2012. At the Jomon Exhibition held in Paris in 2018, it was exhibited along with “flame-shaped earthenware” (a national treasure) and has received high praise overseas.
Nationally designated important cultural properties must be strictly managed and are only displayed for a limited time, so there are very few opportunities for people to see them, making it difficult to increase their visibility.
Therefore, we created elaborate replicas and used them to help children learn about local history by touching them and experiencing their beauty and smoothness, and to display them inside Shinkansen stations for tourists. I would like many people to see it.

Enjoy seeing, touching, and touring Awara City!
In the future, we will create a walking map of the city by combining other content with a focus on “Chinese Earrings” so that you can enjoy touring around the city.
We want as many people as possible to know about the [Crimson Earrings], protect them and pass them on, and provide tourists with an enjoyable stay in Awara, a city rich in culture, history, and art. We will continue to work on creating a town where people can fully enjoy themselves.
