[Event Report] Coal and Metals Seminar with the Government of New South Wales, Australia
On December 11, 2023, JOGMEC held an online seminar on coal and metals in collaboration with the Government of New South Wales, Australia.
The Australian state of New South Wales (hereinafter referred to as “NSW”) is the center of Australia’s economy and is rich in natural resources such as coal and metals, which are important to Japan. For this reason, in September 2017, JOGMEC concluded a memorandum of understanding (MOU) regarding comprehensive and strategic partnership with the NSW Government, and is conducting activities to further promote investment from Japanese companies. We hold investment seminars on an ongoing basis.
In this seminar, policymakers from the state government regarding coal and metals will talk about recent coal licensing projects, demand forecasts for 2030, and their responses, and about metals, information on extensive exploration data obtained by the state government. Promising development projects were introduced, and more than 150 people from power companies, trading companies, resource companies, metal companies, steel companies, etc. participated. In addition, during the Q&A session, many questions were asked, including the impact of decarbonization on government environmental permits, the use of increased revenue from coal royalties, and support for
infrastructure development related to metal projects in the western part of the state, providing a valuable opportunity to exchange opinions. became.
More than 60% of the thermal coal procured by Japan is imported from NSW. Although Japan’s demand for thermal coal will decline in the future due to decarbonization, the importance of high-calorie, high-grade coal will continue to increase as it allows for more efficient power generation. The region continues to be an important source of resources. In recent years, the NSW government has been actively working on metal resource development, and the state has high potential for base metals, rare earths, and battery metals, which are essential for electric vehicles and semiconductor businesses. Through this MOU, JOGMEC will continue to work to further strengthen its relationship with NSW in order to provide a stable supply of energy and resources to our country.
