The Uesugi Snow Lantern Festival is held every year in Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture. The festival, which will be celebrating its 47th anniversary this year, is an important festival for the local community, but it has faced issues such as a decline in the local population and a failure to communicate the significance of the festival.
The number of snow lanterns, which used to be more than 300, has decreased to 166, making it difficult to continue the festival. In order to preserve the traditional culture of the region, update the charm of the region, and pass on the festival to the next generation, Plat Yonezawa Co., Ltd. and a general incorporated association The Yonezawa Tourism and Convention Association has set up the Tohoku Ichiban Cherry Blossom Yonezawa Project Executive Committee, and has donated 300,000 yen to the project’s main project, which will dye the area where cherry blossoms first bloom in Tohoku cherry blossom color. It started on the crowdfunding platform “READYFOR” in December 2023. For the return items, we have partnered with a local business company in Yonezawa to prepare a participatory return program that includes Yonezawa’s special products and allows you to enliven the Snow Lantern Festival together with local people.

The crowdfunding project received support from over 100 people from all over Japan, and we were able to reach our goal of 300,000 yen on the first day. Within the period, we collected 890,000 yen and 9,000 yen, about three times the original estimate, and received many supportive comments. The funds will be used to light up the snow-covered cherry blossom trees inside the venue in a pink color, as well as to paint the flower hand basins pink, and to give out glowing pink psylliums to those who visited the venue on the day. We plan to distribute the Keio cherry blossoms and display them at the venue. Amidst the cold winter, the venue will be the first to feel spring in Tohoku and will be a place where people can look forward to a warmer season.
