Young migrant farmer What is the potential of ICT that made him move from being a strawberry farmer in Fukuoka for 12 years to moving to Kagoshima and becoming a new farmer?

AGRIST Co., Ltd.
What is the potential of ICT that made him decide to start farming after growing strawberries in Fukuoka for 12 years before moving to Kagoshima?
Three new employees hired to manage green pepper cultivation at AGRIST FARM ……
AGRIST Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shintomi-cho, Miyazaki Prefecture, hereinafter referred to as AGRIST), which is creating an agricultural revolution using technology, aims to cultivate high-yield crops at its own farm in Higashikushira-cho, Kagoshima Prefecture (hereinafter referred to as AGRIST FARM) from September 2023. We spoke to three young new farmers about their reasons for working at AGRIST FARM (three times in total).

Three cultivation managers who started farming hydroponic peppers at AGRIST FARM starting in 2023. I am in charge of cultivation management in a greenhouse that manages data using coconut shell culture, which is rare in Japan. This time, we asked Mr. Oshio, who started farming at AGRIST FARM after 12 years of experience as a strawberry farmer, about the appeal of AGRIST FARM.

■Why I changed from being a strawberry farmer for 12 years to a green pepper farmer

Mr. Oshio, who had been growing strawberries on his own for 12 years, decided to end his personal farming as he was faced with uncertainty about the future, strain on his body, and economic anxiety. However, I decided to continue farming because I wanted to explore new
possibilities for farming. “Agriculture is all about the sense of accomplishment in growing plants, being able to do a variety of tasks, and the fun of being able to be creative and inventive.” He continued, “By accurately diagnosing the condition of plants and responding to them, we are able to meet expectations. No matter how many times I experience it, I never get tired of the pleasure I feel in the process of eliciting a reaction,” he says, talking about the appeal of farming, which involves working with living things. ■No knowledge required, no experience required. A new farming model created by AGRIST FARM’s data agriculture

AGRIST is developing an “AI agriculture platform” that enables even new farmers to increase yields by managing and controlling data on the cultivation environment. It is hoped that this system will allow for large-scale production and uniformity of crop quality without relying on intuition and experience. Furthermore, we believe that AGRIST FARM, which can produce crops of consistent quality and has high
reproducibility, will be an ideal farming model for new farmers. ■Using robots and data to achieve highly reproducible cultivation management

Commenting on the efforts at AGRIST FARM, he said, “I believe that agriculture will continue to grow in scale in the future. To achieve this, smart agriculture that utilizes data has high reproducibility, and robots make use of small numbers of people. A different type of farming will be needed, such as the management of crops.Through our efforts at AGRIST FARM, we hope to become a bridge between new technology and equipment and existing cultivation methods.” We are approaching an era where highly reproducible agriculture will be possible by managing data on the cultivation environment and making full use of AI.
