……
Kyoto Prefecture, Kyoto Shimbun, and ARTISTS’ FAIR KYOTO Executive Committee have started selling online tickets for ARTISTS’ FAIR KYOTO 2024, an artist-led art fair set in Kyoto. At Kyoto National Museum Meiji Ancient Capital Building, Kyoto Shimbun Building B1F, and Kiyomizu-dera Temple on Mt. Otowa, works of a wide variety of expressive techniques, from paintings to installations, are on display.
Furthermore, details have been decided for “ARTISTS’ FAIR KYOTO: SATELLITE 2024”, a satellite event of this fair, in which works by the latest artists will be exhibited and sold at restaurants and galleries scattered throughout the city of Kyoto. This year, Kyoto Tsutaya Shoten will be participating for the first time, and the event will be held at six locations, providing opportunities for a diverse range of people, from art enthusiasts to beginners, to experience art. Details of the “History, Criticism, and Art” project, which started in 2022 and aims to foster and support the activities of young critics, will also be announced. Once again, Ryo Sawayama (art critic) and Hirotaka Yamamoto (cultural researcher, artist, lecturer at Kanazawa College of Art) will each write critiques of the works of two artists, publish them in a book, and disseminate them domestically and internationally.

■ Young Critic Training Project “History, Criticism, and Art” In order for Japanese contemporary art to gain international recognition, we aim to produce criticism that can withstand evaluation on a global level and to produce high-level criticism that can compete
internationally. This is a project to develop critics who have the ability to write. Two young artists are selected each year, and based on the selected artists, critics are considered and selected to write reviews. The written reviews will be published as a book, which will be presented and shipped to art-related people in Japan as well as important museums, galleries, universities, research institutes, and cultural institutions overseas. Furthermore, we will hold symposiums and lectures for cultural education, and carry out activities to raise awareness of the project to the general public.
