Excerpt from a long interview with Tomoya Nakamura
From a long interview with Tomoya Nakamura that could not be included in the documentary movie, we will also introduce his usual gameplay, his encounter with FF7, and his comments on his expectations for the latest work, “Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth.”
Q.How often do you usually play games?
There are times when we play every night. I’ve had quite a bit of free time since the new year, so it feels like I’ve been playing every night. I completed “Crisis Core -FFVII-Reunion” the day before filming. That’s why right now I feel like I’m surrounded by mako. Q.What was your first encounter with the FF series and what are your memories of it?
My first encounter with FF was watching FF7 and FF8 being played at a friend’s house when I was in elementary school. I thought I wanted one too, but no one would buy it for me. It was the first time I bought FF9 with my own pocket money. Now that I think about it, I went to a used game store, bought a slightly cheaper version, and played it, which is how I discovered FF7.
Q. Please tell us about your memories of FF7 (original) and your favorite characters.
When I was a boy in school, I liked Cloud, Sephiroth, Vincent, and other characters that tickled my middle schoolers. I really like Tifa right now. As an adult, I like seeing factories. It’s so-called a bit of a steampunk thing, and I get excited just by seeing things that look like steam coming out of piping, and I’m sure that’s something that started in FF7.
Q.If you were to convey the fun of FF7 to someone who hasn’t played it yet, how would you describe it?
It’s an identity. Whether it’s in movies, plays, dramas, or games, I think stories about people searching for their identity will ultimately resonate with people all over the world. Final Fantasy VII is especially about confronting one’s own thoughts and past, thinking about justice, and thinking about the future of this planet, isn’t it? While trying to figure out whether this is what I think, is it really different, or whether this is what I want to do, I establish my own identity, make up my mind, and take a step forward. The difference in strength between Ippo walking without thinking and Ippo walking with an established identity is depicted as the characters grow. I think FF7 has a strong sense of immersion and empathy, so I would recommend it.
Q.What impression did you get when you played the previous game, “FFVII Remake”?
In any case, as the images have become clearer, I’m excited because it’s simply a remake of a game I know, and I can feel the nuances of the emotions and the atmosphere of the town that I couldn’t fully portray at the time, all with my five senses. Now you can. There were many new things I learned and many things that surprised me. I really felt like I could feel the town of Midgar in FF7.
Q.What are your expectations for the latest work, FFVII Rebirth? There are many. I wonder if I’ll go to Junon, Cosmo Canyon, or the Costa del Sol. I think the clearer images will help bring out the characteristics and atmosphere of each town even more. It’s the same with the story, but I’m looking forward to that because each part has a lot of detours. Also, it’s a date event, Gold Saucer. In the original work, we used separate save data for each game. On a larger scale, I think everyone is curious about Aerith. As a fan, I felt that there was a keeper of fate called Feeler in the “Remake,” and that there was no point in releasing it unless there was something different from that. If we assume that Fate is the original FF7, then I would expect something different, and if Lifestream is interpreted as something that revolves around life, I feel that the title “Rebirth” has a lot of meaning.
