“Student Athletes x Future of Learning” Symposium to consider educational programs that encourage dual career formation will be held at JR Hakata City on Friday, March 8th.
Mr. Tadao Isaka, Director and Vice-Chancellor of Ritsumeikan Educational Corporation, Mr. Akira Yoshida, former Japan Rugby National Team member and current Osaka University of Economics and Law rugby club coach, and others took the stage.

Volunteers have set up the “Dual Career Research Group” to study the ideal form of education that encourages the formation of dual careers among athletic club students. This symposium will be held jointly with Nippon Bunri University as the kickoff symposium.

It is said that there are 200,000 “student athletes,” or so-called athletic club students, nationwide. While these students enter universities through the “Sports Recommendation Entrance
Examination,” it is not always possible for them to choose a faculty based on their own interests. There are few universities that have faculties that specialize in sports, and most of them are enrolled in social science faculties such as the faculties of economics and the faculties of law. However, in these departments, it is difficult to say that appropriate understanding and consideration is given to student-athletes.
The sports experience that athletic students have is their skills and competencies. Even in non-athletics departments, the question is how to utilize and develop their abilities in class. We will consider how educational programs should respond to these issues.

After becoming an assistant professor in Ritsumeikan University’s College of Science and Engineering in 1992, he became a professor in the School of Sports and Health Sciences, which was established in 2010, and became the dean of Sports and Health Sciences in 2016. In 2019, he became vice president of Ritsumeikan Gakuen and vice president of Ritsumeikan University. I am mainly working on the theme of analyzing human movements seen during sports activities and daily life from a mechanical and physiological perspective, and applying them to improve competitiveness and support daily activities. At the University Sports Association of Japan (UNIVAS), he serves as the Dual Career Committee Chair and works to support the dual career development of athletic club students.
◆Akira Yoshida (Osaka University of Economics and Law Rugby Club Coach, former Japan Rugby National Team)

He participated in two World Cups (1995 and 1999) and retired from active duty in 2006, where he taught rugby classes and coached student and adult teams. Became a university teacher in 2015, supporting the second career of athletic students from both a teacher and instructor standpoint.
Since 2020, he has been an associate professor at Nihon Bunri University, Faculty of Business and Economics. After that, he served as a visiting researcher at the same university and as a professional coach, and from January 2024, he became the director of Osaka University of Economics and Law’s rugby club.
