Nishinippon Sangyo Co., Ltd. (Head office: Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture, President and CEO: Kimie Imamura) is proceeding with “new construction of rental housing and stores” on land it owns in front of Hanabatake Station in Kurume City. Scheduled for completion in early March 2024, we would like to announce details of the project. “Kurumekurasu Hanabatake” is a regional revitalization project that aims to create a place similar to a large tree where you can find “relaxation and peace” in front of Nishitetsu Hanabatake Station. The project started with the desire to “revitalize the town,” and was designed to be a 9-story building with a total floor area of ​​1,551.61 square meters, located opposite Hanabatake Station. The 1st to 3rd floors will be used as retail areas to revitalize Hanabatake Station, and the 4th to 9th floors will be used as premium rental housing, creating a new sense of value not found in the traditional Kurume rental housing market. We will take on the challenge of regional revitalization in the Hanabatake Station area through a mixed-use residence that will serve as a community place for people living in the area.

Kurumekurasu theme concept
“Kurumekurasu” is the theme of this project and also the name of the building. We defined this as “living in Kurume, which is blessed with a rich natural environment, surrounded by high-quality design and highly functional housing facilities that utilize local resources, and experiencing nature with all five senses.” The concept is “Kurume’s Great Tree.” It has taken deep roots in the local area and has grown to a large size, continuing to provide a “shade” that provides peace of mind as a community place for local people. With this in mind, we aim to create a building that will become a landmark in front of Hanabatake Station.

Kumiko louvers, Kurume Kasuri, and natural wood exterior walls are used. Inspired by the mountain forests of the Chikugo region, we use abundant natural wood and incorporate local traditional crafts and culture into the interior and exterior. The most eye-catching feature on the exterior is the cypress louver, which incorporates the technique of Kumiko, a traditional technique from Kurume City and neighboring Okawa City. Kurume Kasuri, which is characterized by the beauty of indigo dyeing and its rustic texture, is used in various areas such as the entrance hall, elevator halls on each floor, the interior of the 1st and 2nd floor stores, and the bedrooms of the residences. The exterior walls are made of cypress, a bounty from the mountain forests of the Chikugo region. The exterior gives a warm feeling without overpowering the space, making it suitable for a landmark in front of Hanabatake Station and harmonizing with the city. What is Kurumekurasu?
The Kurume region is blessed with rich nature, is close to Fukuoka City, and is located in the Chikugo region, which has supported the development of industry and culture. The area is rich in Kurume Kasuri, Okawa furniture and Okawa Kumiko, wood from the vast mountain forests of the Chikugo region, and water. By valuing local natural and cultural resources and utilizing them in buildings, we contribute to environmental considerations (SDGs) on a global scale.
Through the Kurumekurasu project, we were able to integrate
manufacturing that takes advantage of the local industrial culture with Kurume, a place where you can live comfortably. For example, the houses have windows that are open on three sides and offer a 180-degree view of the scenery, allowing you to experience the nature of the Minou Mountain Range and the changing seasons. Wood is used for the interior and exterior materials, allowing you to feel the warmth of wood and live in touch with the nature and culture that have been cultivated here. Even though we live in a convenient and artificial world, our natural way of living, “seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, and feeling with our skin” relieves fatigue in our bodies and brains. Therefore, we decided to utilize the land we own in front of the station and build a symbolic building made of wood that blends in with the cityscape, creating a place that provides warmth, relaxation, and community to people. Regarding the housing units, we will create high-quality and comfortable living spaces that can be used as “final homes” even though they are rentals, something that has not been seen before in Kurume. In addition, on the lower floors, we will attract a new type of cafe and Western restaurant where local people can gather and interact, and we will also open a gym to promote health and vitality. We are moving forward with the plan, with the aim of the peaceful shade created by this project, “Kurumekurasu”, to contribute to the rich lives of local people, and to serve as a stepping stone to regional revitalization.
