Survey overview
Survey overview: Survey on study abroad experience
Survey period: January 22nd to January 23rd, 2024
Survey method: Internet survey
Survey target: People who have studied abroad on their own (ages 10-30) Number of people surveyed: 330 people
Monitor provider: Japan Business Research

How do I find a place to study abroad? The most common answer was 〇〇! ? First, we asked those surveyed who had studied abroad to answer how they searched for a place to study abroad.
The most common answer was “Internet search,” which can be said to be the most popular search method. 183 out of 330 people, more than half, searched for study abroad destinations online.

Next, “school bulletin board” and “acquaintances/friends/family,” which are search methods that allow you to gather opinions from people other than yourself, received nearly 30 to 40% of votes.
“Flyers” and “magazines” accounted for about 20% of the total, indicating that although they were a minority, information was also collected from paper media.

Since multiple answers were possible for this question, the total number of responses reached 672. Since the survey targeted 330 people, we found that many people gave multiple answers. From these results, it can be seen that when searching for a place to study abroad, students select information from among several options.

The deciding factor in choosing a study abroad destination that is more important than cost performance is 〇〇! ?
So, out of all the information out there, what did you consider when choosing where to study abroad? We also conducted a survey on the points to focus on when looking for a place to study abroad on your own.
Since multiple answers are possible, there may be variations in the answers, but the answer that received the most votes was “Country,” with 70% of people placing importance on the destination. Next, almost the same number of votes were gathered for “Language”. Additionally, more than half of the respondents said that they take into account “expenses” such as air tickets and living expenses, which are essential for studying abroad.
Another thing that stood out was the question about language schools, with nearly 40-50% of respondents answering “school” and “curriculum.”

These results show that many of the purposes for studying abroad are related to language learning.
Now, let’s take a look at what was the deciding factor in choosing where to study abroad.
“Country” was the most frequently chosen answer, about 40% of the total, followed by “language,” “curriculum,” “cost,” and “school.” Although there were slight changes in the rankings, we found that for many people, the points they used as reference when choosing where to study abroad remained the deciding factor.

The most common difficulty when searching for a place to study abroad was 〇〇! ? Especially for those who have never studied abroad, it can be a daunting task to research and complete the procedures for studying abroad from scratch. We also investigated the difficulties faced when looking for a place to study abroad.
The fact that only about 10% of respondents answered “Nothing in particular” shows that there were a large number of people who had difficulty finding a place to study abroad. There was considerable variation in the breakdown, but the one that received the most responses was “cost calculation.” However, “language barrier,” “administrative procedures,” and “information gathering” were also cited at a similar rate to cost calculations.
Studying abroad requires various preparations, and many processes are required before deciding where to study abroad. It may be said that the baptism of studying abroad is that you may struggle with the unfamiliar language and many procedures.

XX people who searched for a place to study abroad on their own regret it! ? When we surveyed people who looked for a place to study abroad on their own to see if they regretted it, the results were surprising. Approximately 32.1%, or one in three people, said they regret searching for a place to study abroad on their own.

Studying abroad is not cheap and requires time, but these results can be said to be very worrying for those who are planning to study abroad.

So, let’s take a closer look at what exactly he regrets.
The most common reason was financial, which accounted for half of all cases, and was “over budget.” As mentioned in the previous section about the difficulties in finding a place to study abroad, “cost calculation” received the most votes, which suggests that many people are forced to struggle with the money involved in studying abroad. It was also found that more than 20% of people cited compatibility issues as reasons for their regrets, such as “the country I studied abroad was not a good fit for me” or “the school was not a good fit for me.”

Among those who have regrets, looking at the responses of those who chose the country as their deciding factor in the previous survey (46 people), 12 people answered that the country they studied abroad was not suitable for them.
It was a surprising result that even though one in four people chose their country as their deciding factor, they said that studying abroad was not a good fit for them.
When searching for a place to study abroad on your own, you are often faced with problems such as a lack of resources and problems as you have to deal with an unfamiliar language and various procedures in the midst of a flood of information. The results of this survey also show that there are many cases where this ultimately leads to regret.

summary
Digitalization is accelerating, and relying on the internet and SNS to gather information is becoming mainstream, as evidenced by the survey result that more than half of those who have studied abroad search for study abroad destinations through internet searches. there is. However, this does not necessarily mean that they are biased towards the internet, and I get the impression that many people use it in conjunction with searching methods that incorporate the opinions of others, such as using bulletin boards at school or asking people around them.

When looking for a place to study abroad, there is a strong tendency to place emphasis on country and language, but I was surprised to find that one in three people regretted their decision. Reasons behind this include financial and cultural differences, such as “I went over my budget” and “The country I studied in didn’t suit me.”
