◆Summary National University Corporation Okayama University
(Headquarters: Kita-ku, Okayama City, President: Yasutomo Nasu) announced on February 7, 2024 that this year’s program will be implemented as part of its efforts regarding the collaboration and cooperation agreement with the Okayama Prefecture Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry. A report session on the results of a workshop aimed at visualizing corporate CO2 emissions was held at the University’s Tsushima Campus’s Commons for Co-development and Co-creation (OUX).
In order to achieve carbon neutrality, it is important to proceed with the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions throughout the supply chain, and as a preliminary step, individual companies must implement the “Carbon Footprint”, which visualizes greenhouse gas emissions. “Print (CFP)” is attracting attention.
In this initiative, students affiliated with Associate Professor Tatsumasa Tennojitani’s laboratory in the Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences (Economics), which specializes in management accounting and cost accounting, will be working with Horiguchi Co., Ltd. (Kurashiki City), a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. We attempted to calculate the carbon footprint of four types of products manufactured by Mabi Town based on the guidelines announced by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Ministry of the Environment in May of last year.
Approximately 50 people from small and medium-sized businesses in the prefecture, financial institutions, and other support organizations participated in the debriefing session. After the students explained the CFP calculation results of four types of products and gave a presentation on measures to spread CFP throughout the world, the participants had a lively discussion about CFP calculation methods and how to disseminate them. Ta. Regarding this challenge, the students said, “The CFP calculation process has many similarities with management accounting and cost accounting, and it was good to know that what I learned can be applied to these areas.I would like to share this experience with my juniors. I want to convey this message.”
The company’s president, Shingo Horiguchi, who participated, said, “I had a truly valuable experience. In the process of collecting data for CFP calculations, I gained a deep understanding of which raw materials and processes generate the most CO2. Using this experience, I would like to work on introducing renewable energy and reviewing procurement and disposal methods in order to get as close to decarbonized management as possible.”
The Tennojidani Laboratory plans to make use of this experience and hold a similar workshop with small and medium-sized businesses in the prefecture next year in collaboration with the Okayama Prefecture Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry. Please look forward to the continued challenges and changes of the Tennojidani Laboratory and Okayama University, a regional core and distinctive research university.
Furthermore, Okayama University is promoting solutions to the problems faced by people in the industrial and economic worlds by utilizing the university’s knowledge and skills.
