■“Elementary school students choose! What is the “Children’s Book General Election”? “We want to create opportunities for children to encounter books and make them feel more familiar with books.” With this in mind, we asked elementary school students to vote for their “favorite book.” This is an event where children will announce the ranking of the selected books. Since the first event was held in 2017, it has been held once every two years. Approximately 540,000 elementary school students participated in the voting in the past three elections. When the results were announced for the past three times, we held a results presentation where the children presented awards to the authors of the books they had chosen, and the events were featured in more than 200 media outlets. In addition, top-ranked works are widely distributed at more than 2,000 bookstores nationwide, and it has become established as an event that is lively not only for children’s books but also for the publishing industry. The “Zannen na Kimono Dictionary” series and “Mysterious Candy Shop Zentendo” series, which were ranked in the top 10 in the past, are now very popular series among children, and the movement started by children themselves is greatly exciting the publishing industry.

It was a really wonderful meeting, with cheers going up every time there was an announcement. I think we have a collection of books that truly stimulate a variety of senses, as everyone has chosen them. I think it’s interesting to think that you should read a book that someone else has chosen as number one even though you haven’t read it yet, and that your sense of self expands further and further.
