Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) today announced 12 new hardware and software solutions to help communications service providers (CSPs) deploy high-performance, sustainable and open networks for wireless, transport, antenna announced that it will significantly strengthen its portfolio.
The highlights of the portfolio enhancement announced at the pre-event of Mobile World Congress 2024 in London are over 25% energy savings and 20% carbon footprint reduction compared to previous generation radios (*1) Our main product is the Massive MIMO TDD (Time Division Duplex) radio AIR 3255.
Featuring new compact metal filter technology that is scalable to all TDD sub6GHz frequency bands, the AIR 3255 accelerates 5G mid-band deployment. Featuring a new generation of Massive MIMO Ericsson Silicon (System on a Chip), this radio is also the first to offer enhanced receive processing and improved energy efficiency. The AIR 3255 also features a single printed circuit board, making it unique in the industry in terms of its mounting method and passive cooling. Mårten Lerner, general manager of network products at Ericsson, said: “Ericsson is proud to be at the forefront of technology, creating network products that are best in performance, sustainability and openness to maximize the innovation potential of 5G and beyond. The new solutions we announced today will drive the next phase of 5G deployment.”
Following the AIR 3255 and expanding with the new radios introduced below, Ericsson’s wireless portfolio is the industry’s most
comprehensive and sustainable Open RAN (Packet Fronthaul-based eCPRI)-enabled radio portfolio. This is in line with Ericsson’s goal of commercializing open RAN.
Towards advancement of 5G performance
●Triple band Massive MIMO FDD radio AIR 3284 (32T/32R) provides twice the downlink capacity and four times the uplink capacity (*2) compared to 4T/4R.
● Radio4823 (4T/8R) doubles uplink performance with isolated remote motorized tilt in the 2.6GHz frequency band, expanding coverage or capacity based on the chosen deployment method.
● Boasting a total carrier bandwidth of up to 1,600MHz and extended coverage of 11dB, the AIR 5343 enables high-capacity, high-performance FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) and macro deployment.
Ultralight midband TDD radio
● Radio 4461HP (High Power) increases output by 50% and reduces embodied carbon footprint by 42%. Radio 8873 is available in both standard power and HP variants.
Ericsson also announced three software features:
● Uplink Multi-User Massive MIMO FDD
Based on the advanced reception function of full IRC (Interference Rejection Combining), it supports up to 4 layers of uplink, increasing capacity and speed.
● Uplink-aware Advanced Multi-Layer Coordination
Identify the optimal cell set for each user, taking into account network configuration, service requirements, downlink cell and uplink cell loads (*3).
● Automated Energy Saver
The sweet spot between maximum performance and energy efficiency is achieved autonomously via CSP-defined intents to adjust radio resources and improve energy efficiency while ensuring the best user experience.
Additionally, Ericsson is rounding out its portfolio enhancements with the introduction of next-generation transport and antenna solutions. ● MINI-LINK 6355
A next-generation all-outdoor E-band node that improves E-band performance. Double the power and 25GE interface to expand hop length and capacity in multi-carrier configurations. Radio Deep Sleep energy saving function has been added to E-band.
● Antenna 4206
2.1 m product with new antenna structure supporting two low bands and four mid bands. Ericsson’s latest high-performance antenna system solution uses a 100% thermoplastic radome and is fully recyclable, resulting in up to 85% beam efficiency, 49% carbon footprint reduction, and 24% weight reduction. Is possible.
Luis Uribe, Head of Enterprise Networks at Entel, said:
“We highly appreciate Ericsson’s new generation Massive MIMO AIR 3255. This ultra-light Massive MIMO radio fits very well with Entel’s sustainability measures and energy saving and decarbonization strategy in network operations. ”
Iskra Nikolova, Head of Network and Infrastructure at Telstra, said: “Telstra and Ericsson have been long-term partners, pushing the boundaries of network performance through faster speeds, higher capacity and better coverage to deliver superior 5G experiences for our customers. , deployed with Wideband Massive MIMO TDD to provide significant downlink capacity, but this relies on powerful FDD uplinks to accommodate increased traffic and improve the experience for customers moving within the cell. New innovations delivered through Massive MIMO FDD with AIR 3284 and Radio 4823 maximize the power of deployed Massive MIMO midband TDD. We look forward to continuing to improve the network experience.”
Mark Düsener, Head of Mobile Networks, Mobile Products and B2B Communications at Swisscom, said:
“Sustainability and user experience are paramount goals for us. The Automated Energy Saver feature allows us to both monitor and manage the user experience while reducing operational complexity and saving energy through advanced automation. It can be promoted.”
Tomohiro Sekiwa, Managing Executive Officer and Chief Network Officer of SoftBank, said:
“Providing our customers with the best 5G experience is the
cornerstone of our close and long-term cooperation with Ericsson. This software innovation is taking the next evolutionary step by selecting the optimal set of cells for each user for maximum network
performance, including both downlink and uplink cell loading. is in response to changes in user behavior where uplink speed is becoming increasingly important for everyday use cases such as photo and video uploads, video interactions, and applications such as AR and VR. We offer all of this to optimize spectrum utilization while delighting our customers.”
said Remy Pascal, Senior Research Manager, Mobile Infrastructure at Omdia. “High performance and sustainability are areas of particular focus for Ericsson. This announcement continues to strengthen Ericsson’s strong reputation in these areas and supports operators in their evolution to 5G Advanced. And the recent announcement with AT&T further lends credibility to Ericsson’s commitment to openness. Finally, automation is the fourth pillar to achieve the overall objective of this announcement. ”

(*1) Embodied carbon emissions are GHG (GreenHouse Gas) emissions generated during the entire process from raw material extraction to final product delivery, before a product is used for the first time. (*2) (*3) With the increasing popularity of uplink-heavy applications such as real-time video calls, AR/VR apps, and broadcasting, uplink performance has become critical to user satisfaction across 5G networks. .
