Tokyo Rainbow Pride, a specified non-profit organization
(co-representative directors: Fumino Sugiyama, Natsumi Yamada) Tokyo Rainbow Pride 2024 (hereinafter referred to as TRP2024), one of Japan’s largest LGBTQ+ related events and a festival that celebrates the diversity of sexuality and life, will be held from April 19th (Friday) to April 2024. It will be held on the 21st (Sunday) at Yoyogi Park Event Plaza. In addition, to mark the 30th anniversary of the Pride Parade in Japan, a commemorative booklet titled “PRIDE We will also carry out crowdfunding for the publication of “30th”. *This year’s theme, which marks the 30th anniversary of Japan’s Pride Parade, is “Never give up until things change.” ”*
In August 1994, Japan’s first Pride Parade was held under the auspices of the Tokyo Lesbian and Gay Parade. Since 2012, Tokyo Rainbow Pride has been an event held in Yoyogi Park, Tokyo, in order to provide a place to celebrate and connect with LGBTQ+ people and their supporters (Ally) about the diversity of sexuality and life. “Pride Parade & Pride Festival” is being held at the square.
Thirty years ago, the parade attracted around 1,100 people, but last year it exceeded 10,000 people, and the festival has grown to a large scale with a total of 240,000 people attending. While I feel that the accumulation of steps taken by each individual who continues to raise their voice is bringing about tangible changes in society, there are still many issues to be solved, such as the lack of progress in legislation. Therefore, TRP2024 will be held under the theme “We will not give up until things change,” with the idea that we will not give up and stop moving forward until we realize a society where everyone, not just LGBTQ+, can live safely as themselves. Masu.

* [Comment from NAGA, who worked on the main visual] *
When I heard this year’s theme, “Don’t give up until you change,” I felt it was a very powerful message. Also, as it was the 30th anniversary of Japan’s first Pride Parade, I was feeling some pressure, and as an ukiyo-e illustrator, I was thinking about how I would express it. At first, I thought of lucky charms such as Daruma and the Seven Lucky Gods, but I wanted to make it as powerful as the theme, so I used the waves from Hokusai’s Great Wave off Kanagawa to depict the unique Edo people who push forward without sinking despite the rough waves.

NAGA: Ukiyo-e illustrator
After starting to work at a public bath at the age of 25, he became interested in traditional Japanese culture, especially the Edo period, and began creating works that mixed his favorite street culture with ukiyo-e. NAGA’s unique world view, which is a fusion of his love of culture and love of the Edo period, is displayed in his many works, which he carefully draws with his unique sensibilities.

“I won’t give up until things change.” With determination for the future Publication of 30th anniversary booklet “PRIDE 30th” and related crowdfunding started
2024 is a milestone year, marking the 30th anniversary (*1) of the first Pride Parade held in Japan. At Tokyo Rainbow Pride, we not only hold the event, but also publish a commemorative booklet titled PRIDE that describes the changes that have occurred in Japan over the past 30 years.
We decided to publish “30th”. While some things have changed over the past 30 years, many things still remain the same. In order to change this situation, it is important for as many people as possible to think and act on their own, rather than just gathering at Yoyogi Park once a year. Therefore, this booklet “PRIDE
Through the publication of “30th”, we hope that as many people as possible will know about the 30th anniversary and its history, and that it will be an opportunity for everyone to think about the future of the next 30 years. We have decided to ask for donations.

[TRP2024 theme and statement]
* Don’t give up until things change. *

I’ve been speaking out for 30 years.
Since Japan’s first PRIDE parade was held in 1994,
Each one raises PRIDE,
I marched while envisioning a society in which I could live my life in my own way.

A small but powerful march,
Over time, it became a major movement.
PRIDE will not end with a rainbow-colored boom,
They believed that we could change the future and continued to fight together. We are where we are today because of all of you.

However, many people say, “I want society to change even tomorrow.” No matter how much we wish, the reality remains the same.

Marriage equality is lagging behind the rest of the world,
Gender gap index that remains unfilled
A limited choice of who you are, and persistent bullying,
discrimination, and prejudice.

Social recognition of LGBTQ+ and diversity and inclusion is spreading, Nowadays, a society that recognizes diverse sexualities, ways of life, and ways of happiness,
Many people want a system to be created for this purpose.

Fair and fair for everyone from diverse backgrounds.
And for a future where you can live happily as yourself,
we don’t give up.

* Don’t give up, change Japan *

For three decades, we’ve raised our voices.

Since 1994, when Japan first embraced the Pride Parade, each of us proudly marched under the Pride banner, picturing a society that embraces authenticity. What started as a modest yet potent march has grown into a formidable movement.

We stand here today because everyone who believed in reshaping the future stood in solidarity with us, keeping the rainbow Pride spirit high. However, despite our collective yearning for societal transformation, reality remains unyielding to the hopeful desires of many.

Enduring challenges persist, from trailing behind in marriage equality to an unresolved gender gap index, limited choices in expressing our true selves, and the relentless presence of bullying, discrimination, and deep-seated prejudices.

As society becomes more aware of LGBTQ+ and diversity and inclusion, we’ve gained a shared desire for a world that recognizes and respects diverse genders, lifestyles, and paths to happiness. A multitude of voices clamor for a future where every individual, in their rich diversity, can live fairly and authentically.

For the sake of a future where each person, regardless of their identity, can live authentically and find happiness,
We vow to never give up and continue to demand change.
Tokyo Rainbow Pride 2024 is an event that celebrates the diversity of sexuality and life together with LGBTQ+ people and their supporters (Ally). By providing a “place to connect,” we aim to create a society where all people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, can live their truest lives without being exposed to discrimination or prejudice.
