Veritas Technologies LLC (https://www.veritas.com/ja/jp)
(Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo, hereafter “Veritas”), a leader in secure multi-cloud data management, today announced the latest global research. The results have been announced. This survey was conducted among 11,500 office workers (1,000 in Japan) from 11 countries around the world, aged 18 to 65 and over, and revealed the actual situation regarding the use of generative AI tools in the workplace.
A global survey reveals that confusion over generative AI tools in the workplace is creating a divide between employees and increasing the risk of sensitive information being compromised. More than 70% of employees admit to using generative AI tools like ChatGPT at work, including actions such as entering customer information, employee information, and company financial information. But nearly a quarter (23%) not only don’t use these tools, but also think it’s wrong for colleagues to use them to help them do their jobs, and they even think they should take a pay cut. The results have become clear. Regardless of how they feel about the use of generative AI tools, 90% say guidelines and policies surrounding their use are important, while only 36% of companies provide mandatory instructions to employees. . On the other hand, in Japan, the use of generative AI tools in the workplace was 38%, the lowest among 11 countries. On a global average, the most common use of generation AI was conducting surveys and information gathering for analysis (42%), while in Japan the answer was the least at 23%. In Japan, the main uses were improving writing (46%) and writing emails/messages/memos (41%).
Furthermore, the results specific to Japan are as follows.
・Japan ranks first at 28% who think there is no personal benefit to using generative AI tools at work (global average: 14%)
・Japan ranks first at 78% who do not think that roles within their organization will be replaced by AI within the next three years (global average: 58%)
・If you found out that one of your colleagues in the same role was using generative AI, you wouldn’t think it was unfair (68%), ranking first in Japan (global average: 47%) )
・When asked what kind of business benefits there are from using generative AI tools in the workplace, Japan ranked first at 21% who answered that there was no benefit at all (global average: 11%).

Even in Japan, where the usage rate of generative AI tools is low, employees want guidelines and policies for generative AI in place. More than three-quarters of employees (77%; Japan: 70%) want guidelines, policies, or training from their employer regarding the use of generative AI within their organization. The most common reasons include ensuring employees know how to use tools in an appropriate manner (68%, 71%), reducing risk (43%, 49%), and ensuring equality in the workplace. to create competitive conditions (25%; Japan: 17%).
Sonya Duffin, Solutions Lead at Veritas, said: “With no guidance from leaders or companies on how to leverage generative AI, some employees are using AI in ways that put the company at risk. This can lead to missed opportunities to increase efficiency across the workforce, something that effective generative AI guidelines and policies can help resolve.”
