In order to realize a cohesive society where a diverse range of people can live with peace of mind, regardless of the presence or absence of disabilities, there is a need to eliminate barriers that exist in society. In addition, the revised Act on the Elimination of
Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities, which will come into effect on April 1, 2024, will require private businesses to provide reasonable accommodation to people with disabilities. Against this background, the importance of introducing universal design products and equipment is increasing not only in public facilities but also in all kinds of facilities such as offices and stores.
Automatic doors have become safer due to advancements in sensors and other factors. However, it only makes certain movements to any passerby. In a survey of concerned parties conducted by Mirairo Research*1 conducted in November 2023, it was found that “Wheelchair users were sometimes unable to open the door because they were unable to reach the touch switch type automatic door switch.” ” and “Visually impaired people were worried because they couldn’t tell if the door was open or closed.”
Some people with physical, trunk, or visual impairments feel inconvenienced or anxious about automatic doors’ touch switches, sensor detection ranges, opening/closing speeds, etc.
*1 “Mirairo Research” is a monitor research service operated by Mirairo. Through web surveys and interview surveys, we support the development and improvement of universal design products and service improvements that take advantage of the perspectives and experiences of people with disabilities.
By combining a dedicated door controller jointly developed by Furutech and Howdy with an automatic door, it is possible to perform flexible opening/closing control according to information from apps and the cloud, and to link with external equipment and services. have become. Mirairo, which is well-versed in universal design, joined the company, and the three companies collaborated to develop the automatic door “Mirairo Door.”
Overview of the automatic door “Mirairo Door”
With a typical automatic door, the initially set operating method cannot be changed each time, but “Mirairo Door” uses a dedicated controller and smartphone to work together to change the operating method such as the opening/closing speed each time according to the attributes of the passerby. I can. In addition, it is equipped with a function that plays guidance announcements through speakers when a visually impaired person approaches, and a function that opens the door without pressing a touch switch when a wheelchair user
approaches. . These functions dramatically increase convenience and safety when passing through automatic doors, and contribute to improving the usability of the entire facility.
The specific usage scenarios are shown below.

Mirairo is a universal design consulting business that takes advantage of the perspectives of people with disabilities. In developing the Mirairo Door, we collected the experiences and opinions of people with disabilities through the Mirairo Research questionnaire. The survey results are reflected. In addition, the smartphone app required to use Mirairo Door can be easily installed and used from Mirairo’s digital disability certificate “Mirairo ID”*2.
*2 “Mirairo ID” is a smartphone app aimed at people who own a disability certificate. You can register information such as your disability certificate, specifications for welfare equipment, and the type of support you are seeking. You can receive discounts by using it in place of your disability certificate.
The core of the “Mirairo Door” system is a dedicated controller jointly developed by Furutech and Howdy. It is a device that enables collaboration with the cloud and smartphones by connecting to automatic doors, and has the advantage of being easy to install on existing automatic doors (Note) and does not require large capital investments.
From now on, we will proceed with preparations for the full-scale launch of this service. There is a wide range of facilities that can benefit from the introduction of Mirairodoor, including government offices, large commercial facilities, hospitals and nursing care facilities, public facilities, and condominiums, and we will work with these businesses to contribute to the realization of a cohesive society.

Mirairo Co., Ltd. Representative Director and President Toshiya Kakiuchi At Mirairo Research, we conducted a survey of many people with disabilities and collected information about the inconveniences and concerns they feel regarding automatic doors. Based on the feedback we received, we developed the Mirairo Door, which led to universal design consulting support that takes advantage of the perspectives of people with disabilities.
By continuing to work to eliminate the barriers of “environment, awareness, and information” that exist in society, we aim to realize a society where no one is left behind.
Furutech Co., Ltd. Representative Director and Vice President Motoaki Furuno After collaborating with Mirairo and hearing the voices of people with disabilities through Mirairo Research, I felt there was a lack of consideration in the past. At the same time, I was able to confirm that most of the problems that I usually experience can be solved with this Mirairo Door, and I am confident that the direction of
development was correct.
From now on, we will work with people who agree with the idea of the social model of disability, which says that it is society’s
responsibility to remove social barriers, to introduce Mirairodoor into many facilities in the city and reduce the anxiety of people with disabilities going out into the city. I hope I can help resolve the issue.
Howdy Co., Ltd. Representative Director and President Futa Asada We have recently developed an automatic door called “Mirairo Door” that works with smartphones using IoT technology, and have realized a system that automatically adjusts the operating method of the automatic door according to the type of disability and attributes of the passerby. Until now, automatic doors could only operate in a uniform manner, but thanks to the power of digital technology, they have evolved into facilities that are friendly and easy to use for everyone. In the future, we will continue to introduce the service to spaces used by a wide variety of people, such as commercial facilities and public facilities, and listen to the voices of users to update the service to make it easier to use.
