……
“Mandarin Oriental Tokyo” (Nihonbashi Muromachi, Chuo-ku, Tokyo, Management: Mandarin Oriental Tokyo Co., Ltd., General Manager: David Colas) is a “Mandarin Bar” with the concept of “Modern Japanese”, and is based in Nihonbashi. From Friday, March 15, 2024, we will be offering cocktails inspired by the post town of Oshu Kaido, one of the five major roads in Japan. During the first chapter, which runs until July 14th (Sunday), you can enjoy four types of cocktails themed around Edo Nihonbashi, the starting point of the Five Highways, as well as Koshigaya-juku, Satte-juku, and Koga-juku.
The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group builds hotels that respect the history, tradition, and culture of the land in which they are located. Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo is located in Nihonbashi, which prospered as the center of the Edo period and is the starting point of the Five Highways, and carries out various initiatives that make use of the traditions and culture of Nihonbashi. A cocktail promotion focusing on “Oshu Kaido”, one of the five major roads, is also part of this effort, and is the second in the series following “Tokaido 53 Stations Promotion I”.
In the first chapter of “Oshu Kaido Promotion,” we will deliver the following cocktails devised by head bartender Kengo Oda and other talented young bartenders. Enjoy innovative, original, and brightly colored cocktails that decorate the season from the pink of spring to the budding of fresh greenery.
■ Oshu Kaido Promotion ~Chapter 1~
0ii. Edo Nihonbashi (currently Chuo Ward, Tokyo)
“Edo Harukaze”
[Image 1: https://prtimes.jp/i/69285/74/resize/d69285-74-ba7b5bdc88a980a06eb3-0.jpg&s3=69285-74-3f6194040562a1dc1c197b2ead841284-3900×2600.jpg] Edo Nihonbashi is the starting point (zero point) of the Five Highways. It is said that during the Edo period, a food culture developed that combined seasonings such as soy sauce and mirin. Inspired by this, “Edo Harukaze” is an Edomae-style cosmopolitan restaurant. A unique cocktail that combines the refreshing acidity of cranberries and lime with the mitarashi dango-like flavor of soy sauce and mirin. At the end of the aftertaste, the scent of cherry blossoms tickles your nostrils, as if a spring breeze had danced around you. 3. Koshigaya-juku (currently Koshigaya City, Saitama Prefecture) “Koshigaya Beads & Berry”
[Image 4: https://prtimes.jp/i/69285/74/resize/d69285-74-deccf78242599edfa805-0.jpg&s3=69285-74-0ac440a177aacd38500c5cd54b2cbca3-3900×2600.jpg] Koshigaya-juku, the third post town from Nihonbashi, was once called the “Rice Storehouse of Edo,” and present-day Koshigaya City is known as a “strawberry picking” spot close to the city center. “Koshigaya Beads & Berry”, which expresses the past and present, is a tequila-based cocktail with a fruity and gentle taste that combines rice milk and strawberries and is accented with the sweetness of honey served on ice. This is a dish that lets you feel the breath of spring. 6. Satte-juku (currently Satte City, Saitama Prefecture)
“Satte Landscape”
[Image 3: https://prtimes.jp/i/69285/74/resize/d69285-74-a23db7b5eebfe7a855c7-0.jpg&s3=69285-74-afa94f2ef5e93249d3e14ab92677aa3b-3900×2600.jpg] Gongendo Sakuratsutsumi, where the 6th Satte-juku was located, is located in present-day Satte City, Saitama Prefecture. In spring, the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and the surrounding area is surrounded by fields of rape blossoms. “Satte Landscape” expresses this beautiful contrast of pink and yellow. A vodka-based cocktail with an exquisite balance of sweetness and bitterness, with a smooth foam followed by the slight bitterness of rape blossoms.
9. Koga-juku (currently Koga City, Ibaraki Prefecture)
“Togenkyo Sour”
[Image 4: https://prtimes.jp/i/69285/74/resize/d69285-74-deccf78242599edfa805-0.jpg&s3=69285-74-0ac440a177aacd38500c5cd54b2cbca3-3900×2600.jpg] Koga City, Ibaraki Prefecture, flourished as the 9th post town in the castle town of Koga Castle, and its origins date back to the Edo period when the lord of the Koga Domain planted peaches, and the peach grove turns bright pink in the spring. The “Togenkyo Sour”, inspired by a magical peach forest, is a gin-based sour cocktail made with peach, cherry, and rose liqueurs. The enchanting scent is layered over and over again, and the spicy aftertaste of the moon peach fruit will transport you to the land of paradise.
The above cocktails cost 2,750 yen each (including consumption tax and excluding 15% service charge).
i The “53 Stations of the Tokaido Promotion” will start in March 2022 and will run for about two years until February 2024, creating cocktails inspired by 23 post towns. Some of the popular cocktails, such as the long cocktail “Hakone Warbling” inspired by Hakone-juku, are now included in the regular menu.
ii The numbering in front of the post town is a serial number starting from the starting point of Gokaido.
