HEAVEN Japan, a women’s underwear brand, held a “class on underwear that is not taught at school” at Osaka Gyouko High School on February 20th and February 26th. This project was planned with the intention of conveying the importance of choosing underwear that fits you perfectly and having knowledge about underwear.
Approximately 80% of women wear underwear of the wrong size, which contributes to poor physical condition such as headaches and stiff shoulders. We planned this project because we wanted to contribute to women’s health care by helping young people learn how to choose underwear that fits them perfectly.

In the Noto Peninsula Earthquake that occurred on January 1, 2024, many of the victims who evacuated with only the clothes on their backs were unable to take a bath, and many of them, especially women, desperately wanted to “at least change their underwear.” There was a voice. We wanted high school students to know about underwear and disaster preparedness, so this time we also talked about the importance of disaster prevention and underwear.

Our research shows that around 80% of women wear the wrong size underwear. If you continue to wear underwear that is the wrong size or doesn’t fit you without realizing it, it not only impairs the original function of underwear to support your bust and body, but also contributes to poor physical condition such as headaches and stiff shoulders. I believe that the main reason for this is that in the past we have chosen our underwear size based on random ideas, or that we do not know how to choose underwear that fits us perfectly.

In addition, some schools have established rules such as “white underwear must be worn under uniforms” based on the belief that “underwear that is not easily see-through = white,” but in reality, white is easily see-through and is closer to the skin color. Unfortunately, it is not widely known that colored materials are less transparent.

This class will contribute to women’s health care by teaching young students knowledge about underwear, such as how to wear underwear correctly, the color of underwear that is not see-through, and how to choose underwear that fits perfectly. Because of our desire to do so, we approached Osaka Gyouko High School in Kawachinagano City, Osaka Prefecture, where HEAVEN Japan’s headquarters are located. Since classes on underwear cannot be taught at schools with a fixed curriculum, I kindly accepted the request as an underwear expert, and I decided to teach underwear classes to students in two first-year classes (Nursing, General Education, and Early Childhood Education). We held a special class where you can learn the importance and knowledge.

In a survey conducted among students after class, the following responses were obtained (targeting 65 students in two classes). ■Are you interested in underwear and the body? Yes → 63 people (96%) No → 0 people (0%) Don’t know → 1 person (2%) No entry → 1 person (2%) ■Did you want to go to an underwear store? Yes → 56 people (86%) No → 5 people (7%) Don’t know → 1 person (2%) blank → 3 people (5%) ■What did you feel after taking the underwear class? (Free entry) – I was always putting it on and taking it off as if it were work, but I wanted to get more interested in it.・I didn’t know how to wear a bra properly, so I learned a lot!・I was surprised to learn that the number of cups looks completely different from what I imagined, and that there is a correct way to attach them. Even though I wear it every day, I realized that I still didn’t know much about underwear.・I haven’t had much interest in underwear until now, but after hearing about it today, I really wanted to know more about it.・I had never really thought about it until now, but it was very interesting to know that it is the right bra for the occasion, and that even if you measure your size, that number is not everything. My shoulders were always getting tired and the straps were slipping off, so I decided to pay more attention to them in the future.・I wanted to go to an underwear store and have them measure me properly. thank you very much.・I realized that the size was completely different from what I expected. I was surprised to see how different the size was depending on how you looked at it.・I learned a lot of things and learned that it is important to know the size that suits you.・I learned that the cup size is just a guideline and that it is important to choose the size that fits you best. I thought it was a wonderful initiative. I was worried about my size, so I decided to work up the courage to go to an underwear store.
・There are more types of underwear than I expected, and although it may be difficult to find the right one for you, I learned that it is important to think about it for your health. I didn’t understand the importance of underwear during an evacuation, so I decided to reconsider.
・I learned that it’s a good idea to keep underwear in your bag even in case of a disaster, so I decided to keep it in there. I haven’t been to an underwear store yet, so I decided to take measurements and go with my parents.
After class, we received a response that exceeded our expectations, with people lining up to take their measurements, and not only the students but also the teachers at Osaka Gyoko High School were very happy. .
