[Gender equality issues to consider on International Women’s Day] What is the number one thing women feel about gender inequality?
“Percentage of housework burden at home”
*Working women’s housework burden rate is 70% on average. Differences in perception between men and women regarding gender inequality* HAPPY WOMAN Executive Committee (Executive Committee Chairperson) aims for “women’s empowerment and gender equality”
Since 2020, Koichi Ogawa has been conducting a survey of working women’s awareness and behavior with the Consumer HHC Division of Eisai Co., Ltd., which sells the Chocola BB brand.

In the 2023 edition of the Gender Gap Index, which summarizes the status of gender disparities around the world, published by the international organization “World Economic Forum”, Japan ranks 125th out of 146 target countries, down from 116th place the previous year. This was the lowest result among the Group of Seven (G7) countries since the survey began in 2006.

In Japan, there is currently a lot of gender bias that is hidden not only in the political and economic fields, but also in everyday life, such as at home.

This survey identified “gender inequality in the home” as an issue for gender equality in Japan.
We have compiled data that highlights “unconscious bias based on gender.” Survey overview
■Survey period: April 2023 ■Research method: Web survey ■Survey area: Nationwide ■Target: Screening survey: 5,309 men and women aged 20 to 59 (3,024 women, 2,285 men) Main survey: Employed people aged 20 to 59 (including part-timers)
2,000 men and women in their 20s/30s/40s/50s
250 people each (after equal allocation by age group, weighted back based on SC data according to the age composition ratio of those who meet the conditions of this survey)

Investigation result
Differences in perception of gender inequality between men and women 1st place for women is “Ratio of housework burden at home”
1st place for men: “Masculinity is required”
Regarding women’s perception of gender inequality, “I feel a difference in the proportion of housework burden at home” was the highest at 33%. Among men, “being expected to be feminine and masculine” was the highest, and the number one inequality felt by women was “I feel a difference in the proportion of housework burden at home,” and the second place was “I feel a difference in the proportion of burden in child-rearing and nursing care.” ” was not in the top five, indicating that there is a difference in perception between men and women.
Women bear 70% of housework; 14 point gap between ideal and reality Regarding the average value of women’s share of housework burden between ideal and reality, the ideal is 56%, while the reality is 70%, a gap of 14 points. Satisfaction with the division of labor was also 45%, 14 points lower than that of men.
In the environment of husband and wife, father and mother
unconscious bias exists
Comparing the image of the division of roles between child-related and general housework, women in each group were more likely to say “I handle it myself” than men. On the other hand, in situations where responsibilities and roles are clear, such as “taking office as a board member or participating in activities of a neighborhood association or condominium board,” the gender difference tends to be more balanced than in child-related matters or general housework. In other words, in general housework, there is an unconscious bias (unconscious assumptions and prejudices) that “women (rather than men) handle housework in an environment of husband and wife, father and mother. You can
Eliminating gender bias is the key to creating a happy society “Gender bias” is where people and society unconsciously hold fixed beliefs and prejudices about gender differences and the roles of men and women. In Japanese society, where many unconscious biases exist, it has become clear that women are more susceptible to gender bias than men. Eliminating this gender bias is an important element in achieving gender equality.

It is important for each individual to think and act not only in government and companies, but also in their daily lives. We can think about gender equality even in our closest homes. You may find a gender gap within your own household, such as in housework and childcare. Sharing work, housework, and childcare is a step toward achieving gender equality.
Let’s work together to create a society where all people can play active roles and live happily.
(HAPPY WOMAN Executive Committee Executive Committee Chairman Koichi Ogawa)
