Metro Weather Co., Ltd. Installing the world’s first “long-distance wind condition measurement device” on a ship sailing at sea

Metro Weather Co., Ltd.
The world’s first “long-distance wind condition measuring device” is installed on a ship sailing at sea.
~Aiming to realize safe and efficient navigation through real-time visualization of wind~
……
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (Representative Director and President: Tsuyoshi Hashimoto, Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo, hereinafter referred to as “MOL”) and Metro Weather Co., Ltd. (Representative Director and President: Junichi Furumoto, Head Office: Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture, hereinafter referred to as “Metro Weather”) , Metro Weather’s long-range wind observation device Doppler Lidar (Note 1) was installed on the RORO ship Musashi Maru, owned by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Sunflower Co., Ltd., a group company of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, and was demonstrated on the Tokyo-Fukuoka route. We have started the experiment.

This is the world’s first installation of Doppler lidar on a large ship sailing at sea. Using Doppler lidar, we can observe the wind conditions over 10 kilometers away from Musashi Maru in three dimensions in real time, and visualize the distant wind conditions on board the ship. The purpose is to transmit big data such as wind conditions obtained onboard ships to land, thereby contributing to reducing fuel consumption and safe navigation onboard ships.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has invested in Metro Weather through its group company’s corporate venture capital company MOL PLUS Co., Ltd., and is promoting business alliances in a wide range of fields. This is one of those initiatives. (Note 2). Both companies will continue to aim to add new value to the shipping industry and society through synergistic effects by leveraging their respective core technologies and resources.
Note 1) What is Doppler Lidar? A type of LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), Doppler Lidar uses infrared rays, which are harmless to the human body, to detect fine particles floating in the air. By emitting a laser and receiving the reflected waves, it is possible to measure the wind direction and speed in three dimensions within a 15 km radius.
Note 2) Previous efforts include the press release dated August 22, 2022, “MOL and Metroweather begin development of the world’s first “shipboard wind condition measurement device” ~ Onboard demonstration experiment using Doppler lidar Please refer to “Success”.

-About Metro Weather Co., Ltd.-
Doppler uses infrared rays to receive reflected light from wind-blown dust and particles in the atmosphere as scatterers, and performs analysis using the Doppler effect to understand and visualize wind conditions in real time and in three dimensions.・We develop and sell lidar and provide data. In order to solve social issues using Doppler lidar, we are conducting joint research and demonstrations with multiple companies and research institutions in Japan and overseas, and from 2021 we are also participating in NASA’s research and development project. .
