Costume artist: Emi Nakamura (TOKYO MIZUHIKI)
Born in Akita Prefecture in 1983. In 2017, I started creative mizuhiki activities using my experience in making art displays. In addition to installations at various locations in Tokyo, in recent years he has created a table runner with a total length of over 24 meters using mizuhiki for the G7 Hiroshima Summit 2023. In addition to accessories, they also produce large-scale works such as lighting shades and partitions. In 2020, we launched “TOKYO MIZUHIKI”, and while taking advantage of the elegance of mizuhiki, we strive to create playful creations by combining new methods and various materials, “to make everyday life somehow more colorful and fun.” We work with this thought in mind. By actively collaborating with players such as artists, craftsmen, and factories, he pursues the possibilities of mizuhiki expression. Recently, he has announced “upcycled mizuhiki,” an initiative that takes into consideration the natural environment, and is also working on dyeing mizuhiki using discarded vegetables. About artist message “THE INSTALLATION HACHI”
The Hachiko statue in Shibuya has been loved as a symbol of meeting people. I imagined how the Hachiko statue would view a world where real-life encounters are being reconsidered after the coronavirus pandemic has ended. Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese culture that has been passed down from generation to generation with the idea of “bringing people together,” and we approached the creation of this work with this concept in mind. The Awaji knot, which is often used in this work, looks like someone with both hands raised in joy. I imagine a world where people join hands and that connection spreads. In addition, even though they may not appear to be connected at first glance, networks are actually formed by intersecting or accidentally connecting somewhere. By deliberately incorporating the process of tying mizuhiki in a random manner, we also expressed that the connections between people are not uniform, but continue while changing expressions and shapes.

[What is Shibuya Fashion Week]
Shibuya Fashion Week was first held in March 2014 under the concept of “Shibuya, an international culture and tourism city,” which aims to make the city of Shibuya a tourist hub open to the world. Since then, it has been held every spring and fall, and this spring marks the 21st time. Until now, we have focused on large commercial facilities around Shibuya Station, and have worked with a variety of partners to spread the unique culture of Shibuya beyond the boundaries of facilities. “SHIBUYA RUNWAY” is a highlight of Shibuya Fashion Week, and runway shows are held at unique venues in Shibuya, enlivening the fashion district of Shibuya.
In the spring of 2021, it was held at the world’s first Shibuya Scramble Crossing, and in the spring of 2022, it was held at a development site in Shibuya, which continues to evolve, and was distributed online. In the fall of 2022, we held a street runway show on Shibuya Bunkamura Street for the first time in three years, disseminating Shibuya’s diverse fashion.
