~ Proposals for solutions to social issues by GLA undergraduate students aiming to contribute to peace ~
……
Students from Kanda University of International Studies (Mihama Ward, Chiba City/President: Takahisa Miyauchi) participated in the “Tableau Data Analysis AWARD 2023” held in December 2023 and achieved runner-up results. This competition is run by volunteer users of the information analysis tool “Tableau” from Tableau Software (*1) in the United States, and the first event was held in December 2022. Our university was runner-up in the first competition, and has been runner-up for the second year in a row. This time, the “KUIS (*2) team” was comprised of two second-year students enrolled in the Global Liberal Arts (hereinafter referred to as GLA) faculty at our university. With the theme of Japan’s suicide problem, the two used Tableau to visualize the huge amount of data released by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, make analysis results and tentative assumptions, and propose solutions to reduce the number of suicides. Announced.
Cultivating the next generation of young data talent Tableau Data Analysis AWARD 2023 aims to cultivate the next generation of young data talent, with each team using Tableau Desktop from a student’s unique perspective, targeting open data related to companies and social issues. We will conduct an analysis using the following tools and present the insights obtained from the analysis. Last year’s event was held under the keyword “We want to develop the next generation of young data professionals” and brought together volunteers from various backgrounds, but this year it will shift to student-run operations and analyze larger themes. We have further evolved to the “Data Analysis AWARD”. The analysis theme this time was “Social Issues,” and the KUIS team of Clarens Nakajima and Sakusa Suzuki, who participated from our university’s GLA faculty, passed the document screening and qualified for the final round held in December, winning second place. obtained. Analyzing the serious problems facing Japan and proposing solutions The title of the KUIS team’s presentation was “Analyzing Japan’s suicide problem and proposing solutions.” The two students learned in class that Japan’s suicide mortality rate is extremely high compared to other countries in the world, ranking first in the G7 (*3). In order to find a solution to this problem, we took up the issue of suicide as an issue. The GLA faculty also incorporates science and mathematics subjects such as data science and big data analysis, and students will learn how to use the data analysis tool Tableau. The two visualized the huge amount of data released by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, analyzed the serious problems facing Japan by repeating the approach of hypothesis and verification, and proposed solutions to reduce the number of suicides. Interview with students Comments from the runner-up team Clarens Nakajima and Sasakura Suzuki, 2nd year, Faculty of Global Liberal Arts First of all, I am really happy that we were able to win runner-up in a competition like this. In achieving these results, we faced challenges unique to the GLA faculty. This meant preparing while completing the huge amount of tasks that were given to me every day. Preparations were not making much progress until the week before the actual event, but we were able to complete the preparations within the limited time available. Also, since I had just started using Tableau, which I used for data analysis, in class, I prepared to keep things simple and not do anything too complicated. Through this experience, I was able to learn about the difficulty of working with data and the importance of data as evidence. I hope to utilize this experience in my future activities. The GLA Faculty cultivates human resources who can contribute to peace. GLA is an acronym for Global Liberal Arts, and its concept is “Global Liberal Arts for Peace,” which means “global education for peace.” We learn about global issues such as refugees, immigrants, food issues, global warming, and environmental destruction, and develop human resources who can take on the challenge of solving them. While studying a wide range of fields from the perspective of what can be done to create a peaceful world, I learned about numerical thinking and data science, which are the knowledge necessary for analysis, even though I am a liberal arts major. We also incorporate science and mathematics subjects such as big data analysis. Two members of the KUIS team have also taken classes on data-mathematical thinking and data science.
