The Liceu Grand Teatro in Barcelona (Spain) hosted a unique hologram live concert by renowned Chinese pianist Lang Lang, fusing technology, music and art. The harmonious fusion of Telefonica’s mid-band 100MHz with Ericsson Private 5G network configured for 5G SA makes this event the first of its kind in the world.

However, what attracted a lot of attention was Lang Lang, who is said to be the best pianist of his generation,
reinterpreting popular pieces by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, and Mendelsohn on a holographic piano, while also creating his own holographic digital expressions. The audience was introduced to a new immersive experience of playing a real piano in perfect
synchronization.
Lang Lang also uses technology to visualize his heartbeat as the rhythm of music using sensors attached to his jacket and LED lighting, allowing him to communicate not only the music but also his own emotions and reactions with the audience. I was able to share it. Lan reached out directly to the audience, asking them to create chords on their phones and immerse themselves in the performance.
Technology that enables magical experiences
This next-generation live entertainment experience was made possible using Telefonica’s mid-band 100MHz with Ericsson Private 5G(*2) solution configured for 5G SA (standalone)(*1).
Lang Lang’s holographic twin used multiple cameras to capture the details of the performance. The images were then sent in 4K, leveraging the high sustained data upload capacity enabled by 5G, to generate high-quality holographic representations in real-time. Additionally, an ultra-low latency connection of less than 10ms with no jitter is maintained throughout the performance, effectively minimizing delay to levels imperceptible to the human eye, making Lang Lang and his digital twin’s hands perfect. We were able to move in sync.
5G SA allows each data stream to be transmitted while maintaining their performance requirements. This allows you to guarantee critical data packets in real-time for requirements such as video and audio synchronization, thousands of simultaneous connections, and fully immersive interaction with shows and artists.
Ericsson Private 5G, Ericsson’s next-generation private network solution, provides secure and reliable 5G connectivity through Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G core solution running on a single server. Built for industrial use, this product is pre-integrated to reduce service deployment time, provide advanced and intelligent operations in any environment, and protect sensitive data in the field. Ericsson Private 5G adapts to and supports a variety of enterprise use cases, industries and levels of complexity.
A leap forward in live entertainment
Telefonica and Ericsson made this historic event possible at Mobile World Congress 2024, thanks to the jointly developed 5G network and the valuable creative and technical contributions of partners Igor Studio and Musion 3D. We have succeeded in providing our viewers with an innovative and memorable experience that is reproducible. Andres Vicente, President and CEO of Ericsson Spain and Portugal, said: “This is a significant step towards the future of live events and shows how 5G connectivity can break through the limitations of fixed assets and wired connectivity. Mobility, delivering immersive experiences like never before, Physical and digital interactions with multiple scenarios, high-quality videos and music are now possible. This simultaneously opens the entertainment industry to explore new powerful monetization strategies and innovative artistic expressions. , which improves efficiency and sustainability.”
Enrique Blanco, Telefonica’s global CTIO, said:
“To commemorate Telefónica’s 100th anniversary, we have partnered with Ericsson to deliver an innovative experience that combines music, video and immersive experiences into one show through holograms. Leveraging its unique characteristics of high capacity and low latency, it is able to combine technology and art, integrate the real world with new forms of communication such as holograms, and break down the barriers between the physical and virtual worlds. The result is an unprecedented experience in which real and digital objects interact in a rich reality show.”
