After being seconded for research at the National Cancer Center Research Institute and the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Tokyo, he obtained a doctoral degree from the same university. In 1997, he researched fatty acids and brain function at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a visiting researcher. He continues to conduct research and give lectures on a daily basis to spread the word about the usefulness of omega-3 fatty acids found in perilla oil and other foods. Since March 2020, he has also served as the president of the Japanese Society of Lipid and Nutrition.
