■ Yasushi Nagahara’s production background
Yasushi Nagahara is a pioneering graphic designer who has been exploring the possibilities of media and design since the 1980s, when the terms multimedia and media design were coined. He has held professorships at multiple universities, including professor at the Department of Information Design at Tama Art University, where he retired in 2023. When I was teaching, I encouraged my students to present their works in art books, but I felt that it would be a challenge to continue this as there were few opportunities for students to present their works after graduation. Therefore, we focused on NFT as a way to make art books more established, which led to our introduction to this exhibition.
This retrospective exhibition not only looks back on Nagahara’s media design practice, but also has the meaning of bridging the past and future of media. Startrail PORT, a blockchain certificate service provided by Startbahn, allows past works to be delivered to the future by preserving work information for a long time without being tampered with. FUN FAN NFT allows you to easily deliver free NFTs, and allows visitors to not only share the experience of participating in the event, but also reflect on that experience.
■ Expected effects of Startrail PORT
“Startrail PORT” is a service that allows you to issue and manage NFTs (blockchain certificates) on the blockchain infrastructure Startail. All histories of highly rare content, including works of art and crafts, can be safely recorded and managed on the blockchain, making it possible to guarantee the reliability and authenticity of the works.
Until now, it has been used to ensure the authenticity of various works and contents, including galleries, auction houses, museums, and e-commerce services.
■ Expected effects of FUN FAN NFT
FUN FAN NFT is an app that allows you to easily distribute, sell, and use NFTs as tickets in real space. By using it for visitor benefits and stamp rally measures, it will lead to improved circulation and repeat visit rate at the event. Visitors can collect digital NFTs by visiting various spots at the venue or the same venue multiple times, and when they collect, they can also receive benefits exclusive to NFT holders. Even after the event, you can use NFT to look back on the event you participated in.
Until now, it has been used in various cultural facilities such as museums, art galleries, and art events to promote circulation and return visits.
■ Blockchain infrastructure “Startrail” used for Startrail PORT and FUN FAN NFT Startrail PORT and FUN FAN NFT are both services that allow you to issue and manage NFTs on Startrail, Startbahn’s blockchain
infrastructure. Startrail aims to ensure the reliability and authenticity of registered works and, in turn, support the inheritance of their value. NFTs issued on Startrail can record various
information and data related to the value of the work, such as information about the business that issued the NFT, as well as subsequent exhibitions, transactions, restorations, and appraisals. ■ Regarding “The Nakadashi of Time: The Encounter of Design and NFT” Yasushi Nagahara is one of the pioneers who has been exploring the possibilities of media and design since the 1980s, when the terms multimedia and media design were coined. Since 1984, when the Macintosh was first introduced to Japan, Nagahara has been one of the first to use computers in design. It is now commonplace for graphic designers to use computers, but what was special about Nagahara was that he saw computers not as a substitute for pens and rulers, but as a new medium. His experiments in creating new design expressions that connect the digital and physical have come to fruition in a series of e-books and algorithmic typography works.
“Media is something that goes hand in hand, and media design is a design that goes hand in hand.” is a keyword that Nagahara has expressed in various places. The title of the exhibition, “The Nakadashi of Time,” reflects Nagahara’s more than 40 years of media design practice, and also has the meaning of bridging the past and future of media. The environment surrounding media and design has changed dramatically with the advent of the Internet, which followed personal computers, and the development of the global capitalist economy. Recently, a wave of new digital technologies such as generative AI, spatial computing, and NFT are about to have a major impact on the work of designers. The exhibition subtitle “Encounter of Design and NFT” represents Nagahara’s latest attempt to view NFT as a new medium.
We hope that this exhibition will be an opportunity for as many people as possible, especially young creators who were born with computers and the Internet, to learn about the achievements of graphic designer/media designer Yasushi Nagahara. .
