[Summary] Biomass has been in the spotlight since the start of the FIT system, but recently there have been doubts about its carbon neutrality (renewability) from an LCA perspective, and it is losing its status year by year. On the other hand, as long as thermal power generation as a regulated power source and the use of steam for heat utilization never disappear, biomass, which can be recycled with extremely high carbon efficiency, is still considered to be a valuable option for decarbonization.
In this lecture, we will focus on woody biomass, introduce the diversity of inputs (woody types) and outputs (energy forms), and discuss a power plant simulation using biomass with a fast
regeneration cycle as an example of sustainability. Finally, as an issue, we will highlight the frequently occurring biomass fires and explain in detail what should be prepared for on the equipment and business sides.
