*More than 260,000 signatures support Congress*
Consumers’ Cooperative Union Pal System Kanagawa (Headquarters: Shin-Yokohama, Kohoku Ward, Yokohama City, Chairman: Junko Fujita) together with the Kanagawa Prefecture Consumers’ Cooperative Association (Headquarters: Kohoku Ward, Yokohama City, Representative Director: Shinichi Togu) called for “Japan In response to a petition calling on the government to sign and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, the Fujisawa City Council passed an opinion on Wednesday, March 27, requesting that the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons be discussed in the Diet. The opinion will be submitted by the city council to the government.
The written opinion will be sent to the government through the city council. At the plenary session on March 27th (Wednesday), the Fujisawa City Council proposed the 15th item, “The Japanese government should act as a bridge so that nuclear weapon states can also participate in discussions at the Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.” “Regarding a written opinion requesting that the government take on a role in this role” was approved with a majority vote.

The opinion was based on the “Signature requesting the Japanese government to sign and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons,” which was solicited from August to November 2021 and collected over 260,000 signatures (78,000 signatures from Pal System Kanagawa alone). On February 26th (Monday), Pal System Kanagawa, together with the Kanagawa Prefecture Atomic Bomb Victims Association (Headquarters: Nishi-Kanagawa, Kanagawa-ku, Yokohama City, Chairman: Susumu Maruyama) and the Kanagawa Prefectural Consumers’ Co-op Federation, summarized the purpose of the petition to Fujisawa City. The petition was submitted to the General Affairs Standing Committee of the City Council for discussion. City Council Pal System Kanagawa officers also attended the general affairs standing committee meeting held on March 6th (Wednesday) and explained the purpose. As a result, the proposal was approved and voted on at the plenary session.

Pal System Kanagawa will continue to call on local assemblies within the prefecture to encourage the Japanese government to take an active role in supporting the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. At the same time, we aim to create a sustainable society by creating opportunities for users to consider issues that they must not forget in their daily lives.
