On March 15, 2024, National University Corporation Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Okayama City, President: Yasutomo Nasu) will hold the Okayama University Top Global University Creation Support Project (SGU) Project General Symposium “The future we want for the region and the earth.” “Co-Creation – Developing a Global Society of Well-Being Together with Youth” was held at Konko Hall, the 50th Anniversary Hall of our university’s Tsushima Campus (simultaneously streamed online). Approximately 170 people participated, including people from other universities, companies, faculty and staff, our students, and high school students.
In the first part, Yosuke Kobayashi, Counselor (International Affairs) of the Higher Education Bureau of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, greeted the guests. We will discuss how our university is making a significant contribution to achieving the SDGs through our participation in international networks, and that we are taking new initiatives toward internationalization of universities through SGU.・It was stated that university reform initiatives are greatly contributing to promoting the
internationalization of universities throughout Japan.
Next, President Yasutomo Nasu reported on the results of the university’s SGU project (PRIME program) and said, “From now on, the keywords will be “region and the earth” and “youth,” which are also included in the title of this symposium.10 By fully incorporating the results of SGU during the year, we will achieve Okayama
University’s long-term vision 2050, “a research university that co-creates the future of the region and the earth and contributes to global innovation,” and create a co-learning environment between Japanese students and international students. We aim to create new opportunities and encourage foreign students to settle in the area.” In the keynote speech, Professor BENTON Caroline Fern of the University of Tsukuba’s Department of Business Science (member of the External Evaluation Committee for the Okayama University Top Global University Creation Support Project) took to the podium and gave a lecture entitled “The role of universities toward internationalization after the coronavirus pandemic.” He spoke about the need for global collaboration in response to turbulent social conditions, the transformative competencies required of future youth, and his expectations for the future of the educational world.

In the second part, a panel discussion was held on the theme of “Co-creating a desirable future for the region and the earth – Working with youth to develop a global society of well-being.” Vice President Atsufumi Yokoi (Global Engagement) served as the facilitator, along with Kokoro Nuno, a third-year student in the Global Discovery Program, Airi Tanai, a sixth-year student in the Faculty of Dentistry, and Taichi Ichikawa, CEO of World Road Co., Ltd. (One Young World Ambassador). ), Professor BENTON Caroline Fern of the University of Tsukuba will be on stage as a panelist. Vice President Yokoi talked about the difference between a global society and a global society, saying, “In the age of a global society, we must work together with young people, not for them, and co-create the future rather than predicting it.” “It’s necessary,” he explained. Afterwards, a lively discussion took place between the speakers, and Ms. Nuno said, “Even during my high school years, I had many points of contact with the world, such as overseas training and opportunities to come into contact with social issues, and I thought that by taking action, I might be able to change the world a little.” One commenter said, “I have developed a sense of not being able to do anything.”
In his closing remarks, Director Seiji Suga (in charge of education) and senior vice president said, “Today’s keywords are “a spirit of challenge” and “resilience.” I would like to take some time to think about how we will carry out such education in the future. I want to continue to do so,” he said in summary.
The SGU project will end this year, but in order to make the various achievements we have cultivated over the past 10 years into the true characteristics of Okayama University, we will continue to work together with students and faculty to promote internationalization and university development. We will continue to work on reforms.
