As a “illustrator,” my view of yokai is undergoing a major transformation as I spend time interacting with yokai. In the past, monsters were something I admired and a way to express myself. If anything, the monsters were vessels for my imagination, where I could express my thoughts related to art and have them act out on my behalf. However, now, in response to the voices of invisible “things” calling out to me, I feel that my mission is to use a single brush from head to toe and continue to draw the forms of monsters. ing.
And that is the bliss of joy for me as a painter. If you were to ask me what the meaning behind the act of drawing monsters is, I wouldn’t be able to find the answer. Is the genre of yokai paintings of any use in today’s civilized society? I do not know. However, what I intuitively understand is that we must not eliminate the existence of invisible things from the culture of this archipelago where we live today. I just wanted to give these endangered species a visual form in the form of illustrations so that people could feel their presence in their daily lives. I’m longing.
