On March 26, 2024, Mr. Robert Pfeffer, a descendant of Dr. Wilhelm Friedrich Philipp Pfeffer (March 9, 1845 – January 31, 1920), professor at the University of Leipzig, Germany. Five of his family and friends visited the university and browsed through the Peffer Library, a collection of the Okayama University Library Institute of Natural Resources and Plant Science Branch (Historical Archives). “Pepfer Bunko” is a world authority on plant physiology that was collected in 1921 by order of the founder, Mr. Magosaburo Ohara, during the era of the Ohara Shonokai Agricultural Research Institute, which was the predecessor of the Institute of Resource Plant Science. A collection of 11,730 books owned by Dr. W. Pfeffer. Historically valuable items related to botany, including the manuscript book “Pflanzenphysiologie” specially created by Dr. W. Pfeffer when revising his own book, as well as the manuscript by C. Darwin, a natural scientist famous for his theory of evolution. Contains materials showing handwritten dedications.
On the day, the group was welcomed by Takashi Hirayama, director of the Institute for Resources and Plant Sciences, Makoto Takeda Library, director of the Institute for Resources and Plant Sciences, and other related parties. Afterwards, we moved to the attached library branch, which houses the Peffer Bunko, and deepened our interactions in a peaceful atmosphere from beginning to end.
Mr. Robert Pfeffer and his family viewed Dr. W. Pfeffer’s handwritten notes in the collection of the “Pepffer Library” with deep emotion. I listened with great interest to Branch Director Takeda and Director Hirayama’s explanations about the origins of our institute, how we were able to purchase Dr. W. Pfeffer’s collection of books, our current research content, and our activities as a graduate school. I am also deeply moved by the fact that the staff of our institute took the lead in deciphering and typing the handwritten proofread text in the textbook written by Dr. W. Pfeffer, publishing the book with an English translation, and carrying out public relations activities. was doing.
