It has been found that a certain percentage of people who visit outpatient clinics for coronavirus after-effects have various other hidden illnesses, and that the elderly have a higher rate of discovering other medical illnesses.
In 67% of cases, a disease related to the aftereffect symptoms was found, and in the rest, diseases unrelated to the aftereffect symptoms were also discovered.
If symptoms persist for a long time even after being infected with the coronavirus, it is important to seek medical attention to check for other illnesses.

◆Overview
Yasuhiro Nakano, lecturer of the Takahashi Department of General Practice, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Okayama City, President: Yasutomo Nasu) and Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmaceutical Sciences, National University Corporation Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Okayama City, President: Yasutomo Nasu) A group led by Fumio Otsuka, a professor of general internal medicine at Okayama University Hospital, has discovered that a certain percentage of patients who visit the coronavirus aftereffects outpatient clinic (corona aftercare outpatient clinic) at Okayama University Hospital have various other illnesses. It has become clear that These research results were published in “Scientific Reports”, an open access journal of Germany’s Springer Nature, on March 5, 2024.
The after-effects of the coronavirus have become a global social issue, and the number of medical institutions that can provide treatment has increased in Japan. However, it has been found that not all symptoms that linger after being infected with the coronavirus are aftereffects, and that the elderly are particularly likely to have other illnesses. When treating the after-effects of coronavirus, it is important to properly investigate whether other diseases are hidden. Based on the results of this research, it is expected that some people who have lingering symptoms even after being infected with the coronavirus may actually have their symptoms improved by diagnosing and treating other hidden diseases.

Our hospital’s coronavirus aftercare outpatient clinic is staffed by multiple doctors from general internal medicine and general medicine departments. I believe that because our department provides
comprehensive medical care on a daily basis, we are able to discover many hidden diseases without overlooking them. I would like to continue to approach medical treatment from a comprehensive and wide-ranging perspective.

-Professor Fumio Otsuka-
If you continue to experience various symptoms, including fatigue, even 2 to 3 months after being infected with the coronavirus, we recommend that you consult your family doctor. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, people are refraining from medical examinations, so it is important to have proper examinations.
