National University Corporation Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Okayama City, President: Yasutomo Nasu) is implementing the “Okayama University Young Top Researcher Research Encouragement Award” to honor young researchers who have achieved outstanding results. Associate Professor Xiaojing Cai of the Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences, Academic Research Institute, was selected as the recipient of the 2020 Liberal Arts Award, and Ryo Nakamichi, Research Associate Professor of Okayama University Hospital, was selected as the recipient of the Science Award. An awards ceremony was held. Associate Professor Tsai specializes in quantitative finance and is engaged in advanced research that combines knowledge of quantitative finance with knowledge of machine learning and deep learning, with a focus on financial market data analysis centered on ESG investment. As an orthopedic surgeon, Associate Professor Nakamichi has studied clinical medicine with a focus on upper extremity trauma.He has a particular interest in the treatment of tendon and ligament injuries, which are still difficult to completely treat in the orthopedic field. We are working on regenerative medicine and preventive medicine research from both basic research aspects. Conduct research at top-level overseas research institutes, and in 2022 be selected as a third-year student of the JST Emergent Research Support Project, which aims to create seeds that will lead to disruptive innovation, and in 2023 to excel in papers and external funding acquisition. His research activities as a next-generation leader were highly praised, including being certified as a “Research Associate Professor,” which is given to researchers with outstanding achievements.
At the ceremony, President Yasutomo Nasu handed out certificates and commemorative items to the winners, and held a friendly discussion with Takuo Kuboki, Vice Director of Research (Research
Infrastructure), and Emi Uneyama, Director of Academic Research Promotion.
President Nasu said, “Okayama University will be selected for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s “Regional Core and Distinctive Research Universities Strengthening Promotion Project (J-PEAKS)” in December 2023, and will continue to make great strides as a research university that leads social change. Now is the time, and we would like to create an environment in which young researchers, who will be responsible for the future, can further accelerate their research. I hope that this award will serve as an opportunity for them to become active young people who will lead the next generation of Okayama University, and to aim for even greater heights.”
This award was established in 2007 to foster young researchers who can play an active role internationally. Prize winners are determined through careful internal review based on evaluation criteria such as research results, competitive research funding acquisition status, and future potential.
