manufacturer that provides semiconductors for a wide variety of electronic devices, announced the STM32U0 series, a general-purpose 32-bit microcontroller with excellent power efficiency and cost performance. Did. This product can reduce power consumption by up to 50% compared to conventional products, contributing to extending battery life. This helps minimize the environmental impact of battery disposal. It also enables the design of equipment that does not require batteries and operates solely on energy harvesting systems such as small solar cells.
As sustainability demands increase worldwide, the technologies deployed in smart buildings and IoT applications are critical to efficiently managing energy and resources. ST’s microcontrollers are used as the core of the smart sensors and actuators that make this possible, controlling processes such as data collection, filtering, analysis, and processing while communicating with higher-level applications in the cloud. Billions of such microcontrollers are already in operation, and as living and work environments become smarter, more microcontrollers will be needed.
Patrick Aidoune, general manager of ST’s general purpose
microcontroller division, commented: “For devices that are widely used in a variety of locations, it is important to reduce power consumption as much as possible and minimize waste. Based on power technology, it contributes to even lower power consumption. The power consumption of the STM32U0 microcontroller is extremely low, and the operating time of small devices used for specialized applications such as controlling industrial sensors can be doubled with the same size battery. This allows us to provide more advanced and cost-effective solutions for a wide range of industrial, medical and consumer devices.”
The STM32U0 microcontroller combines ST’s cutting-edge design technology and advanced manufacturing processes to deliver dramatic improvements in power efficiency. Ultra-low quiescent power
consumption in standby mode and excellent wake-up performance minimizes average power consumption by spending more time in low-power sleep mode can do.
One of our major customers in the security systems market is using the STM32U0 microcontroller in their security cameras. The camera is activated when motion is detected, improving monitoring performance and reducing power consumption. Some companies have developed fire detectors that can operate for extremely long periods of time. Ascoel also uses STM32U0 microcontrollers to control ultra-low power features in water meters.
Francesco Cerretani, Senior Software Engineer at Ascoel commented: “We are focusing on IoT technology and developing a wide range of innovative electronic devices. The ultrasonic water meter currently being designed will feature an LCD screen to display real-time data, while providing the necessary security. , with a battery life of over 10 years. The STM32U0 microcontroller is the perfect solution to our goal of developing a low-cost, ultra-low-power, easy-to-implement, maintenance-free, high-precision water meter. Large-scale introduction into the water supply network will improve water leakage control and contribute to reducing environmental impact.”
The STM32U0 MCU provides a cost-effective LCD segmented display controller. Ascoel’s LCD-equipped devices such as water meters, thermostats, retail smart labels, access control panels, and factory automation can take advantage of this feature to reduce board costs. It also has other value-added features and integrates numerous analog peripherals such as AD converters, DA converters, operational amplifiers, and comparators. It also has a built-in system oscillator, which reduces the number of components and contributes to cost reduction and miniaturization of the board area.
The STM32U0 microcontroller is the first Arm(R) Cortex(R)-M0+ based microcontroller to target SESIP Level 3 and PSA Level 1 certification for firmware code protection. SESIP Level 3 certification allows device manufacturers to guarantee the security functions of their STM32U0 microcontrollers by a third party, thereby ensuring compliance with the US Cyber Trust Mark, which will be established voluntarily in the future, and European Union wireless, which will become mandatory in 2025. It can be used to comply with the Equipment Directive (RED).
Developers can also take advantage of the highest performance for this class, including up to 256KB of Flash memory, package options up to 81 pins, and cores operating at frequencies up to 56MHz.
The STM32U0 series is currently in mass production and costs approximately $0.68 in quantities of 1000 units. Please contact your ST sales office or distributor for pricing and sample availability. For more information, please visit our website
